No one is forgotten, nothing is forgotten: six Ukrainian military men have been sentenced for brutal crimes against civilians in Russia’s Kursk Region.
A few months ago, South Front began publishing materials about the crimes of Ukrainian soldiers in the Kursk Region of Russia.
The last time, we told about Ukrainian serviceman Yevgeny Fabrisenko, who together with his fellows first raped and then shot dozens of civilians.
Unfortunately, as time has shown, “Crimes And Punishment” has become our regular column. The details of yet other atrocities have recently come to light.
A Russian military court has not long ago sentenced several servicemen of the 22nd separate mechanized brigade and the 115th separate assault brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) for “committing terrorist acts”. This wording hides, among other things, their crimes against civilians.
According to the case file, Ukrainians Sergey Bochenko, Valery Malchenko, Sergey Litvinenko and Sergey Bilichenko illegally crossed the Russian border in August 2024 and entered the Kursk Region as part of their military unit. While in the Suja and Korenevo districts, these persons intimidated the local population using weapons, occupied private households, hindered the evacuation of the civilians, and repeatedly opened fire to kill Russian servicemen and innocent people. They were not part of the punitive detachments of the Ukrainian army and were not ordered to kill civilians en masse. However, according to witnesses and other evidence, they deliberately fired at locals, including children.
The war criminals were captured by the Russian military on August 13, 2024, during hostilities. They were lucky thrice: first they survived fighting with the Russian army, then they avoided reprisals for their crimes when captured and imprisoned, and finally they received short sentences of 15 to 16 years. Each of them fully pleaded guilty. All convicts will serve the first 3 years of their sentences in prison, and the remainder – in a high-security penal colony.
One of the convicts, Sergey Bochenko, has already appeared on the South Front channel in August 2024 in a video interview, where he spoke in detail about how he was drafted into the UAF.
During the conversation, Sergey Bochenko reported that he was mobilized into the Ukrainian army and trained in the Mykolaiv Region. He also recalled that in the combat zone he repeatedly met foreign mercenaries, who sometimes even commanded certain operations of the UAF. It is curious that during this interrogation, when the circumstances of his crimes were not yet known, Sergey Bochenko tried in every possible way to convince everybody of his innocence. He said that he was forcibly transferred to the Russian Kursk Region, given rations for two days and some water. At the end of the conversation, he confesses to considering himself a Russian and even calls on Ukrainian servicemen to lay down their arms.
Another trial against Ukrainian war criminals was also completed the other day. A Russian court found two servicemen from the 225th “Shkval” battalion of the 115th separate assault brigade of the UAF guilty of committing serious crimes. Formally, they were also convicted under the article “terrorism”.
The investigation found that on August 29, 2024, Dmitry Ignatenko and Yuri Maslyukov, armed with AK-74, AKM, UAR-10M sniper rifles and explosive devices, illegally crossed the border near the Glushkovo and Korenevo districts of the Kursk Region, where they committed crimes against civilians. Unlike the already mentioned UAF servicemen, these guys were professional saboteurs, as can be seen from their equipment alone. This raises many questions as to why Ukrainian elite troops allow themselves to commit mass crimes against civilians. There can obviously be two answers. The first is that the Ukrainian army has decayed to such an extent that even elite special units are recruiting scumbags and criminals. The second is that the Ukrainian special forces are deliberately selecting people who are ready to kill civilians just because they belong to Russia. Unfortunately, there is no third answer. Dmitry Ignatenko and Yuri Maslyukov were captured on September 26, 2024 during hostilities.
Under Russian law, criminals convicted of serious crimes are not eligible for early release or exchange. However, in a Russian prison, they are unlikely to face extremely harsh treatment or a quick death. Judging by numerous journalistic investigations, a system of secret prisons for the mass torture and murder of “terrorists” exists only in the United States and Israel.
Russia, as history shows, has always chosen a different path, namely the targeted elimination of war criminals abroad. In terms of the efficiency and systematic nature of these actions, no other intelligence service, not even the Mossad, can objectively compete with Russians. For example, Soviet intelligence successfully hunted Nazi collaborators and killers of civilians around the world for decades, sparing no effort and resources. Since the 1990s, Russian special services have been methodically eliminating Chechen and Arab militants abroad who took part in the executions of Russian soldiers in the Caucasus. Curiously, Russia has long ago established good relations with its unbridled Chechen region, and through it has built an exemplary partnership with the Arab world. But so far, however, war criminals of a bygone era have been brutally and mercilessly eliminated, regardless of their nationality, religion or political implications. It does not matter whether they live in Qatar, Germany or the United States. The assassins always turn out to be experienced Russian intelligence officers. In case they are caught, their safe return to the homeland is handled personally by the country’s leadership.
In other words, we should never envy those war criminals who escaped death on the battlefield or a Russian prison. They will be tried harshly, not according to the law and without statute of limitations. They will be found anywhere across the globe, even if it takes decades.
