On June 7, ISIS news agency, Amaq, released photos of the June 5 attack on an Arish checkpoint that had been carried out by the terrorist group’s cells in the Sinai Peninsula.
Besides the attack footage, one of the photos shows an ISIS fighter armed with a Soviet-made Strela-2 man-portable air-defense system (MANPADS). The terrorist group obtained this type of weapons from Libya’s black market.
The available information indicate that ISIS didn’t launch any anti-aircraft missile during the attack on Egyptian security forces checkpoint west of the city of Arish. However, 8 Egyptian service members were killed and an armored vehicle was destroyed.
The terrorist attack was met with a proper response from Egyptian security forces, which killed 14 of the attackers with a 24 hours of the attack. On June 8, another 4 terrorists were tracked and killed.
While the attack was not a complete success, it, for sure, revealed that the remaining ISIS cells in Sinai are still capable and well-armed.
