بعد سقوط نظام الرئيس السابق بشار الأسد، يبدو أن تقارير الانتهاكات ضد الأطفال في سوريا قد زادت بشكل كبير.
تأثر الأطفال بالحرب بشكل كبير في جميع أنحاء البلاد. وعلى الرغم من أنه لا توجد بيانات صلبة عن الوضع قبل سقوط النظام، فإن الوضع الأمني في المناطق التي يسيطر عليها المتمردون الإسلاميون، والتي افتقدت لأي شعور حقيقي بالقانون والنظام، كان بلا شك أسوأ. كان الأطفال هناك أكثر عُرضة لجميع أنواع الجرائم.

فتاة أخرى، إسراء عطالله العواد الكِرتا، واجهت مصيرًا أشد حزنًا في مدينة محكان في ريف دير الزور الجنوبي.
قُبِض على الفتاة، وعلى ما يُقال تعذّبت حتى فُقدت عيناها معًا، ثم أُحرقت حتى الموت. جثة الفتاة المشوّهة عُثِر عليها في بئر صرف صحي. بعض السكان فسّروا أن الجاني كان بسيكوباثيًا مَرضيًا، بينما فسر آخرون أنه من المحتمل أنه متطرف ديني يمارس نوعًا من السحر الدموي.

فتاة ثالثة، تبلغ ثماني سنوات فقط، وَجدت ميتة في مخيم الكوى للاجئين قرب مدينة جرابلس في ريف حلب الشمالي.
قال السكان الذين شاهدوا الجثة إن الفتاة أُغتصبت جنسيًا ثم خُنقت حتى الموت. مع ذلك، ساهم ضابط شرطة، بالتعاون مع طبيب محلي، في نسب وفاتها إلى لدغة أفعى.
أيضًا في ريف حلب الشمالي، أُطلق النار على فتاة أخرى وقتلها بالقرب من الجانب السوري من معبر باب السلامة الحدودي مع تركيا. وتُشير ظروف وفاتها إلى أنها قد تكون أُطلقت عليها النار من قبل حرس الحدود السوريين، فهم الوحيدة المساوِلة بالسلاح هناك.

بالإضافة إلى هذه الجرائم، أُبلغ عن اختطاف فتاتين، إحداهما 17 والأخرى 19 عامًا، بالقرب من مدينة الباب في ريف حلب الشرقي في 9 أغسطس.
في 10 أغسطس، عُثِر على جثة صبي، يقال إنه في بدايات سنوات المراهقة، داخل كيس بالستي وضع على جانب الطريق قرب مدينة دِمْسَركو، شمال مدينة اللاذقية الساحلية.
هذه الحالات مجرد مثال على الوضع الأمني الحالي في سوريا. في أي من هذه الحالات لم تلعب دوافع سياسية أو طائفية دوراً. تبدو هذه الجرائم ببساطة من عمل مرضى نفسيين يستغلون حالة عدم المحاسبة التي أوجدتها الحكومة.
على مدى الأشهر السبعة الماضية تقريباً، كانت الحكومة تعد بإصلاح قواتها الأمنية ونظامها القانوني. مع ذلك، يبدو أن الأمور تزداد سوءًا فقط. ومع الرفض التام لإعادة تشغيل أفراد الأمن السابقين، الذين كانوا أكثر كفاءة في مكافحة الجرائم، من المرجح ألا تتحسن الأوضاع.
