Casualties Reported Following Attack By Turkish Forces On SDF Positions In Syria’s Raqqa (Photos, Videos)

On January 22, Turkish forces attacked positions of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) near the town of Ain Issa in the northern countryside of Syria’s Raqqa.

The Azm Operations Room, a coalition of several National Army factions, said that its militants had raided positions of the SDF. However, a field commander of the SDF told the Hawar News Agency, that the attack, which targeted positions near the villages of Jhbal and al-Misherfah to the east of Ain Issa, was foiled.

Two Turkish-backed militants were killed during the attack. An unknown number of SDF fighters were also killed or wounded.

The Turkish military supported its proxies by shelling a number of SDF positions in the outskirts of Ain Isaa. According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the Turkish shelling killed five civilians and wounded four others.

The attack on Ain Issa came amid a heated battle between the SDF and ISIS in al-Hasakah city, to the east of Raqqa. The battle began late on January 20 when the terrorist group’s cells launched a large-scale attack on a SDF-run prison to free their comrades.

On January 21, a Turkish drone strike targeted reinforcements sent by the SDF to al-Hasakah city. The strike claimed the lives of two fighters of the SDF.

The Turkish military and its proxies appear to be planning to take advantage of the chaos caused by ISIS attack in al-Hasakah city to further pressure the SDF.
