On July 27, a blast rocked the Shia shrine town of Sayyidah Zaynab which is located some 16 kilometers to the south of the Syrian capital, Damascus.
Syrian state TV said that the blast was caused by an explosive device that was planted under a taxi, without providing any further details.
Meanwhile, a Syrian security source told Sputnik that the blast was likely a “terrorist attack.” Another source who works at Sayyidah Zaynab hospital said that a woman was killed along with her three children in the explosion. This is yet to be confirmed, however.
The Sabreen News channel on Telegram said that the blast took place near the headquarters of Liwa Abu al-Fadhal al-Abbas, an Iraqi Shia armed group that was formed in the early years of the Syrian war to guard Sayyidah Zaynab and support government forces.
Later, the news channel, which has ties to Iraqi armed groups, reported that suicide bomber was apprehended near the scene of the blast.
This was the second blast to target Sayyidah Zaynab, which is one of the most important destinations for Shia Muslim pilgrims, this week. Two days ago, two civilians were wounded when a booby-trapped motorcycle exploded near a bus in the town.
The Shia shrine town was the target of several terrorist attacks in the past. During 2016, three bombings by ISIS claimed the lives of more than 200 people.
The new bombings in Sayyidah Zaynab were most likely orchestrated by ISIS or another terrorist group, like al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, in order to invoke sectarian hatred and destabilize the situation in Damascus and its outskirts.
