The Taliban had killed Roohullah Saleh, brother of former Afghan Vice President Amarullah Saleh, in the northeastern province of Panjshir, Afghan sources reported on September 10.

Roohullah was reportedly ambushed by Taliban fighters in the district of Rukha as he was attempting to flee Panjshir towards the capital, Kabul. The death of Roohullah is yet to be officially confirmed by his family, the Afghan resistance or the Taliban.

Following the fall of Kabul in the hands of the Taliban and the escape of Afghan President Ashraf Ghani on August 15, Amarullah took refuge in Panjshir where he declared himself the acting president of the country. Soon after, Amarullah joined resistance forces led by Ahmed Massoud Jr. and became one of its top leaders.

Amarullah disappeared when the Taliban took over Panjshir on September 6. According to a number of sources, he is currently in Tajikistan.

Roohullah was not the first senior figure of the Afghan resistance to be killed by the Taliban. On September 5, Fahim Dashty, a spokesman for the resistance, and General Abdul Wudod Zara, a commander of the resistance and nephew of late Afghan leader Ahmed Massoud, were killed by the group. Back then, Afghan sources blamed Pakistan.

The situation in Panjshir remains unstable. Clashes are still taking place in the province, where many are reportedly being displaced by the Taliban. On September 10, the group announced a 3-day ceasefire to allow the locals to bury their dead.

The Taliban appears to be determined to neutralize the resistance of Panjshir. Resistance leader Ahmed Massoud Jr. is reportedly hiding in the province.
