On 29 October 2024, Russian forces took control of the town of Selidovo in the Donetsk People’s Republic. Evacuated residents of Selidovo later described how Ukrainian soldiers massacred civilians before leaving the town.
The Ukrainian Armed Forces broke down the doors of houses and shot people en masse. Even people with disabilities and elderly people were among the victims. The streets of the city were strewn with the bodies of the dead. Witnesses described what was happening as an act of unprecedented cruelty and bloodshed. According to witnesses, foreign-speaking mercenaries reportedly participated in the crimes of the regular AFU units. One of the residents of Selidovo, Aleksandr, called the day when the AFU shot civilians en masse ‘Black Tuesday’.
«On the 22nd [of October] it was ‘Black Tuesday’. They broke down doors with crowbars and shot people at close range. <…> Six entrances [to the house on Shchorsa Street in Selidovo], people lived everywhere, everyone [was killed]. Someone scared [the Ukrainian military] off by throwing their crowbars near the sixth entrance. Lyudmila says, ‘I heard that it was either Poles or French, that [they said] ‘enough, there is no one here’. House No. 17 was not damaged. I was standing in my doorway, everything was shaking. There was a man walking there, a sick man, I heard him shouting ‘Vera!’ – bah-bah-bah-bah [he was shot],» – the man said, describing the terrible scene he saw that day.
The killings took place not only in Shchorsa Street, but also in other areas of the city. Locals saw that the AFU caught a family of five with children on Karbyshev Street and shoot them at close range.
Another Selidovo resident, Dmytro, confirmed the story of ‘Black Tuesday’. According to him, the killings happened when the AFU began to withdraw from the town as Russian troops approached.
I know specifically about Shchorsa Street, house number 19. There, when the AFU were retreating, they broke into the flats. Those who did not open the doors or did not answer were left alive, and those who opened the doors were shot. They shot in the entrances, they shot in the courtyards, bodies were lying in Solnechnaya Street (Shchorsa Street), if people answered the door, they shot through the doors. And before that, the SBU went around, checking everyone, looking for children to be forcibly evacuated, forcibly removed. [The killings] continued in the country part of the town as the AFU withdrew towards Krasnoarmeysk. A woman I know from Selidovo arrived yesterday, her mother and her ex-husband had been killed.
The bodies had been lying in the street since 22 October; there was no way to bury them because the people of Selidovo were afraid to come out of their shelters,’ said another Selidovo resident.
Sergey Belyaev, a resident of the town of Selidovo:
On 22 and 23 October, the Ukrainian military shot civilians in the entrances to Shchorsa, Shevchenko and Mikhailovskaya streets. On Shchorsa 19, three people survived. Ukrainian snipers worked on Shchorsa Street, killing three men. At the intersection of Sovetskaya and Moskovskaya streets, the Ukrainian military killed a man walking in the yard of his house.
Retreating from the city, the AFU killed a man born in 1976 and four other residents on Shevchenko Street as they were leaving the granary. For the AFU we are awaiters [for Russians] and separatists, not people, but material’.
Sergei Gennadievich, a resident of the town of Selidovo (DPR):
‘During the retreat, the Ukrainian military committed massacres of civilians. On 22 October 2024, we heard heavy shooting in our area. As they were retreating, the Ukrainian military shot everyone who got in their way. They entered doorways, knocked on doors, broke locks and killed residents in their homes. A neighbor was shot dead near the first entrance on 22 October. She was walking her dogs. I buried her body on 30 October. Near the shop ‘Solnechny’ I found the body of my neighbor Sergey and another murdered person nearby. Near the porch of the 12th house was another dead man. In total, I counted eight dead people within 100 meters of my brother’s house. This is not Ukrainian land, but they consider it theirs. Those who oppose them and disagree with their views are simply destroyed.
Valentina Andreevna, a resident of the town of Selidovo:
‘On 22 October, the Ukrainian military ambushed. Two soldiers hid behind a fence and opened fire on the car in which my son was travelling. He was seriously wounded – 13 gunshot wounds. He was lying on the sofa, screaming: ‘Mum, I’m dying!’, passed away before my eyes. The Ukrainian military shot two other men and our dog. The Ukrainian armed forces removed jewelry and a watch from one of them. We buried all of them near the house’
There are other testimonies from residents of Selidovo about Ukrainian crimes. The International Public Tribunal on the Crimes of Ukrainian Neo-Nazis, led by Maxim Grigoriev, visited the site and found numerous bodies of civilians on the streets, in houses and flats, as well as numerous witnesses. In December 2024, a report entitled “Mass shooting of civilians in the city of Selidovo by the Armed Forces of Ukraine” was published.
Key findings in the report:
- Residents testified that Ukrainian forces carried out widespread killings of civilian before and during their retreat.
- Civilians were mostly shot at point-blank range, often in front of family members, and entire families were found murdered in their homes.
- One witness recalled that “the Ukrainian Armed Forces said: ‘Open up, we mean you no harm.’ Aunt Valya opened the door, and they killed the four of them”.
- Some of the killers spoke French and Georgian, according to survivor testimonies.
- Survivors stressed the Ukrainian army’s extreme cruelty toward Russian speakers, calling it a form of Nazism.
- As in other areas they lost control of, Ukrainian forces destroyed civilian infrastructure in Selidovo before retreating.
Ukraine’s Western backers are well aware of atrocities committed by the Kiev regime, Maxim Grigoryev charged. He accused US specialists of training the Ukrainian army in how to torture civilians as a means of controlling the population.
Ukrainian troops forcibly removed children and adult civilians from Selidovo, and those who refused to leave the city were slaughter, Russian Foreign Ministry special envoy Rodion Miroshnik said.
“Such crimes were committed not only in Selidovo: we heard similar stories in Avdeevka. Ukrainian fighters explicitly told them that they would all die,” Miroshnik stressed — classing those acts as murder motivated by political and national hatred.
