As of January 22, clashes between the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and ISIS cells are still ongoing in the northeastern Syrian city of al-Hasakah.

The clashes broke out two days earlier when the terrorists launched a large-scale attack on Geweran prison, where some 5,000 Syrian and foreign inmates were being held. The attack, which began as an operation to free ISIS captives, ended up with the terrorist occupying the prison and nearby areas.

During the first and second days of the battle, the SDF was able to contain the terrorists within Geweran prison and the nearby neighborhood of al-Zuhur. US-led coalition warplanes provided SDF fighters with close air support.

The clashes drove thousands of civilians out form al-Hasakah city’s southern districts. However, some civilians are being held as hostages by ISIS terrorists.

Claims by the SDF command that ISIS attack was repelled were dismissed by many news sources as intense clashes were reported around Geweran prison and in nearby areas on January 22. US-led coalition attack helicopters targeted several positions and gatherings of the terrorists in these areas.

So far, the SDF has captured more than 120 inmates who escaped from Geweran prison during ISIS attack. However, many others are still missing. As for now, the prison is still out of the SDF’s control.

According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the battle in al-Hasakah city has so far claimed the lives of 45 ISIS terrorists, five civilians and 28 personnel of the SDF and its security forces.

The SDF and the US-led coalition were aware of ISIS plans to attack Geweran Prison. In November and December, two booby-trapped vehicles, which were prepared for the attack, were destroyed. Still, the terrorist group’s cells were able to carry out the attack.

USA, Saudi, Israel and UAE are behind this “ISIL” action. More ISIL will be moved to Assad, Iraq and Jemen… This is an “artificial” USA reason to stay in Syria and Iraq.
