A new round of clashes was reported in Armenian-Azerbaijani border region.  The incident took place in the Kelbajar district, which came under the control of Azerbaijan following the recent war in Nagorno-Karabakh.

According to Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense, on July 23, at about 16:00, the Armenian armed forces units from the positions in the Basarkechar region subjected to fire positions of the Azerbaijan Army in the area of the Kalbajar region of the Armenian-Azerbaijani state border.

The Azerbaijan Army serviceman, identified as officer Yagubli Farman Telman, was killed as a result of sniper fire.

On the other hand, the Armenian side also claimed the shelling of its positions in Gegharkunik, as a result of which three servicemen of the Armenian armed forces were wounded.

The situation in the border regions is steadily deteriorating.  The last fire exchange in the border regions was reported on July 20.

Amid the recent escalation, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, on July 19, arrived to Baku, which became the second point of his tour after Yerevan.

While commenting on the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict, he did not use the term “Nagorno-Karabakh”.

“The fact that Charles Michel did not use the words “status”, “Nagorno-Karabakh”, of course, was a very wise step. It was a step of a statesman. We appreciate this, and Armenia should draw a conclusion. There is no status, no Nagorno-Karabakh” – Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev commented in his interview on July 22.

The Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) was not rec0gnised by the UN member states, including Armenia.
