At least 35 people were killed and over 60 wounded in coordinated suicide attacks at a Shi’ite mausoleum north of Baghdad last night. Also, several militants allegedly stormed the site, shooting Eid al-Fitr festival pilgrims.

  • The first suicide bomber detonated an explosives belt near police officers at the external gate of the Mausoleum of Sayid Mohammed bin Ali al-Hadi at around 11:00pm local time (8:00pm GMT).
  • The second suicide bomber went inside the shrine and blew himself up in the middle of the crowd celebrating the festival of Eid al-Fitr. Meanwhile, gunmen opened fire on security personnel in the area.
  • Security gunned down the third bomber down before he could detonate his explosives belt.

Reurters reported that the mausoleum was also targeted by a rocket fire during the attacks.

The ISIS terrorist group claimed responsibility for the attacks and confirmed in a statement that the bombings had been carried out by three attackers wearing suicide belts.
