An car bomb exploded at a military checkpoint near a presidential palace in Somalia’s Mogadishu, killing at least 16 people and wounding at least 20 others, police said on December 22. 3 staffers from the London-based Universal TV station were among killed in the incident.
The al-Qaida-linked terrorist group al-Shabab extremist group claimed responsibility for the attack.
Al-Shabab remains one of the key power brokers in Somalia despite constant efforts of the US military and its allies to limit the influence of the group. At least 47 U.S. strikes were carriedout on al-Shabab targets in 2018.
Despite this, the U.S. military, Somali forces and a 20,000-strong African Union peacekeeping mission have not been able to defeat the terrorist group so far.
