The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on May 17 that it had intercepted a drone launched “from the east,” in apparent reference to the Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen.

“Alerts were activated in accordance with policy,” the military said in a statement, without elaborating.

There was no comment from the Houthis, who renewed their attacks against Israel since the IDF resumed operations in the Gaza Strip on March 18. The group usually announces such attacks within 24 hours.

The drone attack came just a day after the IDF targeted infrastructure at the Houthi-controlled ports of al-Hodeidah and Salif in the western Yemeni province of al-Hodeida. The intense Israeli strikes caused significant damage, but there were no reports of casualties. The military later said that it will take the Houthis about a month to restore the two ports.

Over the last two months, the Houthis have launched 34 ballistic missiles and at least 10 suicide drones at Israel. According to the IDF, most of the projectiles either got shot down or fell short.

The IDF resumed strikes on Yemen earlier this month as the United States suddenly halted an operation launched in mid-March against the Houthis.

The strikes hit infrastructure from the ports in al-Hodeidah, to cement factories, power stations and Sanaa International Airport in the Yemeni capital.

During the strike on Sanaa on May 6, the IDF damaged the airport’s runways and destroyed the terminal buildings and six planes. Still, the airport resumed operations on May 17, with the arrival of a Yemenia Airways flight from Amman carrying 136 passengers.

The Houthis showed astonishing resolve in the face of the U.S., and they are now repeating that while directly confronting Israel.
