On January 19, Al-Shabaab militants overran a military camp in on the outskirts of the town of Kismayo, Somalia’s Lower Juba province. According to pro-militant sources, at least 15 pro-government fighters was killed in this attack.
Separately, Al-Shabaab carried out an attack on another military camp in the same province. The group claimed that it had killed up to 25 pro-government fighters.
On January 19, the US Africa Command stressed that US forces had conducted airstrikes on militant positions near Jilib, Middle Juba region killing 52 militants. Jubaland regional security minister Abdirashid Hassan Abdinur told state-run Radio Mogadishu that the number of killed from the al-Shabab side could be as high as 73.
There was no immediate Al-Shabaab comment on the death toll.
