Car bombs explosions and a gunfire were reported at a military base in southern Somalia on August 14.

“We heard two huge blasts and gunfire from the direction of the Somali military base. I saw several soldiers running away from the base to escape but we cannot know how many were killed,” Reuoters quoted elder from the Awdhigle district, Aden Abdullahi.

The attack took place in the agricultural district of Awdheegle, located along the Shabelle River, 70 km southwest of the country’s capital, Mogadishu.

The Al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabaab terrorist group claimed responsibility for the attack. The group said that the attackers killed 50 government soldiers and burnt their vehicles. However, no evidence was presented to confirm the provided numbers.
