The number of foreign mercenaries killed in Ukraine continues to grow. New “bounty hunters” have been identified, and their fate has proven to be extremely unfortunate. Despite this terrible reality, the flow of people looking to make money is not slowing down.
All for the money
One of the West’s strengths is its highly developed and effective propaganda apparatus. Skillful public relations campaigns in the media and on social networks can shape public opinion on any issue. The Ukrainian conflict is actively covered. Above all, the Ukrainian army’s battlefield successes are presented, even though there are none. The dynamics of the front line speak for themselves.
With the help of their foreign sponsors, the Ukrainians have also built an extremely effective propaganda apparatus. Moreover, it works not only for the domestic audience but also for the foreign one. Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, and other platforms are full of videos showing how advanced the Ukrainian army is. This is done, among other things, to recruit people into the army. As Ukraine’s internal human resources are dwindling, Kyiv has turned to external sources.
Residents of developing countries have become the main target of Ukrainian propaganda. Foreign recruits are promised large cash payments, service in elite units, and easy targets among Russian soldiers. In most developing countries, it is virtually impossible to earn such money through honest labor, so people are taking the bait. The outcome for most of these “soldiers of fortune” is far from happy. Many of them remain in Ukraine forever.

Every foreigner is promised a spot in the Special Forces. However, few people consider that there simply aren’t enough spots for everyone in such elite units. Therefore, “second-rate” mercenaries from Latin American countries, whom the Ukrainian command does not care about, face a different fate. They are highly likely to join the ranks of the assault infantry, which minimizes their chances of survival.

Alexander Castaneda Losada callsign Cuero from Palermo, Huila, Colombia;

These mercenaries were fortunate to survive, but they all lost limbs. The money they earned in the war will likely not be enough to compensate for the life opportunities they have lost due to their severe injuries.

Luis Felipe Vieira Toledo Porto, whose callsign is Rex, is from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He has been eliminated in Ukraine. He arrived to participate in combat operations in 2024. He joined the 23rd Mechanized Brigade and took part in the battles of Novoocheretuvate, Donetsk region, which ended in the death of his friends. He was slightly wounded.
He then transferred to the 31st Mechanized Brigade as a drone operator and served there until November 2025. At the end of the month, Russian army intelligence discovered his position, and the target was struck with aerial bombs. The entire team of operators was wiped out, leaving nothing to bury. Relatives who came for the funeral could only stand by a symbolic cross.

These mercenaries served in the elite units of Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR). They are citizens of developed countries—the United States and Denmark—which is why they are able to serve. Mercenaries from developing countries do not enjoy such privileges.

Kauã Victor da Silva callsign Kurt from Anápolis, Goiás, Brazil. Kauã was only 19 years old and had no military experience. In Brazil, he was a sushiman and worked at a well-known Oriental restaurant in Anápolis. He arrived in Ukraine in August 2025 in search of easy money. Being young, this mercenary likely wanted to live a beautiful and rich life. He joined the neo-Nazi unit of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Armed Forces of Ukraine called “Revanche.”
The unit was then transferred to Stepnogorsk, where Russian paratroopers were conducting an offensive. This was the Ukrainian command’s attempt to stabilize the situation. Upon arriving in the settlement, half of the group of foreign mercenaries was destroyed. Kaua managed to survive a little longer, but ultimately, he shared the fate of his comrades.
At least 25 foreign mercenaries were killed or seriously wounded last week. These are only the identified cases. Most of those arriving at the front deliberately conceal their identities, fearing for the safety of their families and loved ones back home. For this reason, they do not bring their documents.
Another issue that complicates the identification of deceased mercenaries is physical damage. It is often impossible to determine identity without medical DNA testing. FPV drones, which carry significant amounts of explosives, predominate on the front line. Damage from strikes by this type of weapon can make identification impossible.
The third and main reason is the Ukrainian army’s retreat. Most of the bodies of destroyed mercenaries remain in territory occupied by the Russian army. Under such intense combat conditions, no one will bother to identify foreigners. The vast majority of them will remain in unmarked mass graves forever.
