On January 12, the Saudi-backed wing of the Yemeni military announced that its units have shot down a suicide unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) of the Houthis on the frontline with the strategic area of Maran in the northern province of Saada.

“After inspecting the remains of the plane, which was packed with explosives, we found out that it was Iranian made,” the Yemeni military said in an official statement, according to the al-Arabiya TV.

SouthFront was not able to find any photos of the UAV’s remains. However, the information provided by the Yemeni military indicate that the drone was of the Qasef-1 type, which is a copy of the Iranian Ababil-2.

The suicide UAV was apparently launched from Maran, which is the historical heartland of the Houthi dynasty. The Saudi-led coalition believes that the leadership of the Yemeni group are currently hiding in the rough mountainous region.

According to the Yemeni military, this was the third UAV attack in Saada in the last ten days. This shows that the Houthis have stepped up their capabilities to operate these advanced weapon systems.
