On May 13, a suicide bomber blew himself up at the entrance of the customs and finance department in the city of Jalalabad of the western Nangarhar province. Following the explosion, militants armed with suicide jackets and automatic guns stormed the department building and began a gun battle with Afghan security forces, according to the Chinese Xinhua News Agency.

Attahullah Khogyani, a spokesman for the governor of Nangarhar province, told the Qatari al-Jazeera TV that eight civilians, including three finance department employees, had been killed and twenty-four others had been injured in the attack.

Hours later, ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack in Jalalabad through its new agency Amaq and revealed that a booby-trapped car and motorcycle had been used in the attack. According to Amaq’s claims, more than one hundred personnel of the Afghan security forces and intelligence were killed and injured.

ISIS cells have carried out a series of similar attacks in Jalalabad since the beginning of 2018. According to observers, the terrorist organization controls wide areas and key roads in Nangarhar province, which allow it to maneuver and organize such deadly attacks.

The Afghan government may be taking the brunt of the assault but they ultimately benefit from the fact their enemies are divided and have US/UK support. So even if this war does go full Mad Max like Syria the Afghan government will rise from the ashes victorious.
