“Russia’s entrance, given its potential and capabilities, is something we see is going to have an effect on limiting terrorism in Syria and eradicating it,” Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said in an interview on Saturday.

In general, Egypt has been avoiding to show the support for Assad. It seeks to become an important part of the US-led balance of power in the Middle East. Also, it maintains good relationships with a number of local leaders (Saudi Arabia, Turkey) supporting terrorists groups in Syria.

For instance, Egypt is participating in the Saudi-led military operation in Yemen.

Shoukry’s comments is a feature of warming relations between Russia and Egypt. The SouthFront: Anaylsis & Intelligence team noticed this fact in the “Overview of the Relationships between Russia and Egypt” posted on September 2.

Another reason of this statement is Egypt faces a growth of violence in North Sinai. The ISIS-linked terrorist group is the main threat there.
