On December 13, ISIS fighters launched a surprise attack on the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) from their positions in in the Yarmouk refugee camp south of the Syrian capital, Damascus, according to the ISIS-linked news agency Amaq.

The media outlet claimed that ISIS fighters captured several positions of the SAA north of the camp and killed dozens of SAA soldiers during the attack.

However, the Hezbollah media wing in Syria said that the SAA repelled ISIS attack and recaptured all lost positions north of the Yarmouk camp hours only after the attack had started. According to pro-government sources, only one SAA soldier was killed by ISIS.

Pro-government activists believe that ISIS attack south of Damascus is an attempt to distract the SAA from its final battle against the terrorist organization in eastern Syria. Especially that the attack south of Damascus was timed with another wide-scale attack of ISIS on the western bank of the Euphrates River in the southeastern Deir Ezzor countryside.

After eliminating ISIS in eastern Syria, the SAA and the Palestinian Liberation Army (PLA) will likely launch a military operation to liberate the Yarmouk camp from terrorists.
