The KamAZ truck have been started to be equipped with the S-60 57-mm anti-aircraft gun. A video, showing the improvised self-propelled gun, operating on the front line, was published online on the official channel of the Syrian Army in Youtube.
The video allows seeing that the gun was mounted on the Kamaz truck of the Mustang series.
The anti-aircraft gun is capable to reach and destroy a target at a distance of up to 4,000 meters. There were cases when a shell, fired from this gun with an initial speed of 1000 meters per second, hit the T-55 tank and put it out of action, while light armored vehicles, such as the BMP-1, were turned into scrap. At the same time, a high-explosive fragmentation shell, weighing 2.8 kg, is very effective against enemy manpower.
Syrian handymen have already showed their ingenuity many times, ‘intercrossing’ various types of Soviet military hardware and weapons. So, the GAZ-3308 Sadko was equipped with the legendary ZiS-2 57-mm cannon, used during the Great Patriotic War, the UR-83P Zmey Gorynych and the Vulkan multiple artillery rocket system.
The S-60 was also mounted on a chassis of the Ural off-road vehicles.

After the syrian experiment every 3rd country should be researching on the weaponization of civilian vehicles, it seems is the most efficient way to equip an army, and it is a good way to understand the tactics used by terrorists. I was thinking there should be a way to simulate the tactical role of a svbied with another type of weapon platform (one that do not requires suicide soldiers), it seems to be an extremely effective motorized weapon concept. Perhaps a short range (4km) heavy guided missile(500kg of TNT) lancher that can be adapted on SUVs could have a similar role of the nefarious car bomb.
Remote controled tracked bombs were used in WWII. They turned out to be pretty vulnerable to incoming fire.

But i’ve not proposed these, of course a slow drone bomb would be vulnerable, it lacks the speed and reaction time of a proper driver, however a short range heavy load guided missile will beat both of them. Keep in mind that this also is not a weapong for conventional warfare, it is weapon platform to be adapted on civilian vehicles turning them in on demand heavy duty rocket launchers.
The main thing that made VBIEDs effective is their novelty, and resulting lack of training in dealing with them. With proper scouting, or basic roadblocks they are pretty vulnerable.
They cannot have thick armor because of weight limitation, and cannot have enough speed and maneuverability to evade incoming fire.
Similar to this is Houthi remote controlled boat that managed to hit Saudi ship. It can work as a surprise few times, but I don’t think it can go further than that.
It’s not so simple, even yesterday vbied was used with succes in Irak, terrorist, or I should say guerrila warfare, can create openings so they can be used with success.
And, as I said, my idea is not exactly VBIED, but a cheap adaptable weapon platform that can perform in the same role as them, meaning a higlhy destructble explosion aimed at breaking fortified positions. Usually this can only be achieved with aircraft bombing or expensive rocket systems.
Perhaps one of the reasons states military industries do not create such weapon is they would empower paramilitary forces, but the way I see it the same role is being performed by SVBIED already, and they can only be used by terrorist forces.
Well, military industry sell their weapons to big armies, so they don’t do much research on needs of small groups of low budget fighters.
The basic idea od self-propelled-explosive-charge-for-destroying-fortified-positions has been out there for a long time (petard being predecessor of all https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petard ), and lot of experiments were made but not to much success. With cheap remote controlled technology available nowdays there is room for advancement but it will be more in a direction of remote controlled tanks and similar vehicles (which Russians are already using).
Indeed, but a remote controled tank is too expensive still, and it demands tons of training to use properly. Well, certainly there will be new trick in the ever evolving military technology.

The Syrian Army and their allies are in a Guerilla war now. From 2011 to 2014 there were not and lost nearly eyerywere (not prepared for an inner operating enemy). Since they were trained in Guerilla tactics they take one region after the other. Only the Hezbollah had experiences in a guerilla war.
Actually, this is a typical example of self-propelled gun. I am sure it is pretty effective in a Toyota-destroyer role.
