The Houthis (Ansar Allah) reported new gains in Yemen’s Taiz province on October 6, claiming their forces had taken a strategic mountain, pushed Saudi-backed forces out of another district and repelled an attempt to advance.
A Houthi military source quoted by the Saba news agency said the group’s forces had taken control of Jabal Matran in al-Mawasit district and captured a large amount of military equipment, including vehicles and weapons. The advance tightened the siege on Saudi-backed forces in Taiz city.
The same source added that the group had driven Saudi-backed military concentrations from the entirety of al-Silw district.
Houthi military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree separately said the group’s forces had repelled Saudi-backed forces attempting to advance toward Houthi positions southwest of al-Wazi’iyah in Taiz.
The attacking forces made no progress, while several vehicles and armored vehicles were destroyed and dozens of personnel were killed or wounded, according to the spokesman, who added that the Houthis fired ballistic missiles at concentrations of reinforcements that had been sent to support the stalled advance. Saree also said the group’s forces were continuing to pursue Saudi-backed forces in other parts of Taiz, describing their opponents as disorganized and saying some were fleeing.
Meanwhile, near Bab al-Mandab, the counterattack launched by Saudi-backed forces has stalled due to effective resistance from the Houthis.
Saree said that several advance attempts were thwarted near the strategic waterway, adding that dozens of “ballistic missiles” hit concentrations of Saudi-backed forces there, killing and wounding dozens of fighters and destroying a large number of vehicles.
The escalation has brought a sharp increase in Saudi air operations across Yemen. Saudi Arabia said Monday that its aircraft had struck hundreds of targets in support of the ground offensive, while Houthi-run media have reported strikes in multiple provinces as well as the capital, Sanaa.
The intensified bombing produced more civilian casualties. The Houthi-run Health Ministry said that a Saudi airstrike on a home in the village of Umm al-Dahi in Haradh district of Hajjah province killed six members of one family — a father, mother and four children between the ages of 3 and 8. It said a sixth child, a 6-year-old girl, was critically wounded and that some victims remained under the rubble.
The fighting now extends across two major axes, and the Houthis hold the upper hand in both. The battle of Taiz is the most critical as its outcome could determine whether Saudi-backed forces could mount an effective defense or continue to collapse.
