The Houthis (Ansar Allah) released two videos on October 5 showing attacks on Saudi-backed forces in Yemen, as government forces launched a major offensive to push the group back from the Bab al-Mandab Strait.
One video showed first-person-view suicide drones striking troops and vehicles on several fronts. The Houthi military media said new drones called “Shoawaz,” Arabic for shrapnel, were used in the attacks but did not identify where or when exactly the strikes took place.
The second video showed strikes against concentrations of Saudi-backed forces near Ras al-Ara. The Houthi military media also did not provide a date. The footage, apparently recorded by a surveillance drone, showed what the Houthis described as “locally made missiles” hitting positions and setting several vehicles on fire, while dozens of fighters fled the area.
Ras al-Ara is in Lahj province, north of the Bab al-Mandab Strait. The area became a front line in September after the Houthis pushed south along the Red Sea coast, capturing Mokha and advancing through Dhubab toward the strait. Fighting later spread across the area between Taiz’s al-Wazi’iyah district and Lahj’s al-Mudharabah.
It is possible that the footage from Ras al-Ara was recorded during that September advance rather than during the latest fighting.
Earlier in the day, Saudi-backed forces launched a major offensive along the Red Sea coast. They claimed to have seized the Dhubab district and positions around Bab al-Mandab, while Saudi Arabia said about 100 fighter jets were providing air support for the operation. The Houthis have disputed the reported government gains.
The renewed fighting followed the Houthis’ September advance, when they captured Mokha and moved into Dhubab, the coastal district directly opposite Perim Island in the Bab al-Mandab Strait. The strait links the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and is one of the world’s major maritime chokepoints.
