Syria’s Interior Ministry said on September 29 it had foiled what it described as a sabotage plot by a cell linked to Hezbollah in the southern governorate of Daraa, the latest in a series of accusations by Damascus against the Lebanese group.
In a brief statement carried by state media, the ministry said security forces had dismantled the cell and prevented the planned operation, but did not publicly identify its intended target.
Given Daraa’s location near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights and the history of attacks launched from southern Syria, Israel appears the most likely target, although the ministry did not explicitly say so.

The accusation comes despite deepening tensions between Syria and Israel. Israeli forces have continued military activity in southern Syria, while Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa used his September 23 United Nations address to sharply criticize Israel, accusing it of hundreds of strikes and more than 1,200 ground incursions since he came to power.
At the same time, Damascus has continued pursuing a security arrangement with Israel through United States-mediated talks.
Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani said in August that Damascus expected negotiations to resume and described ending Israeli attacks and securing an Israeli withdrawal from Syrian territory as priorities. Still, no new round of talks has been reported since then.
The latest Hezbollah accusation therefore also serves to reinforce Damascus’ message that it will not allow Syrian territory to be used for attacks against Israel.
By publicly announcing the alleged operation and attributing it to a Hezbollah-linked cell, Damascus is signaling to Israel and its Western backers that it is prepared to suppress groups that could provide a justification for further Israeli military action.
Hezbollah has repeatedly denied similar accusations from Damascus. In May, after the Interior Ministry said it had dismantled a Hezbollah-linked cell accused of planning attacks and assassinations inside Syria, the group categorically rejected the allegations and said it had no presence or activity in Syrian territory.
The group had issued a similar denial in April, when Syrian authorities accused a cell of ties to Hezbollah after arresting five people in Damascus. Hezbollah called those allegations “false and fabricated” and again said it had no activity or presence in Syria.
