In the Sumy direction, Russian assault groups of the “North” grouping, after taking Maryino under control, are developing success in the adjacent forest tracts, advancing in the areas of Kiyanitsa and Khoten, while the Ukrainian command has reinforced the assault groups of the 71st Separate Airmobile Brigade with forcibly mobilised personnel. In the Kharkiv direction, Russian units are tightening the encirclement ring in the northeast of the region; Petropavlovka and Lozovaya have come under control, and attempts to break out near Nefyodovka using armoured vehicles have been repelled. In the Slavyansk direction, Ukrainian units are attempting to press through Orekhovatka and Krivaya Luka toward Kalinovka; intense fighting is under way on the approaches to Kramatorsk, with the most difficult situation remaining on the Rubtsovsk and Krasny Liman sectors. In the Zaporozhye direction, Russian units have advanced west of Zorevka and northwest of Zarnitsa. In the concluding part, French reserve general Olivier Kempf stated that Kyiv faces serious manpower problems, citing plans to recruit 30,000 men per month and losses of 27,000 per month.
Sumy direction
The Ukrainian command has reinforced the assault groups of the 71st Separate Airmobile Brigade with forcibly mobilised servicemen, transferring up to a company of personnel from training grounds.
In Sumy district, Russian assault groups, after taking Maryino under control, are developing success in the adjacent forest tracts. There is progress in the areas of Kiyanitsa and Khoten. In Shostka district small-arms fighting is under way near Ulanovo. Russian artillery actively worked against Ukrainian positions near Tolstodubovo. In Krasnopolye district movement near Stepok continues.
In the Sumy direction Ukrainian units have placed sections of the defensive line in forest tracts north of Sumy. The terrain there is undulating, with gullies of the Psel river system. Sweeping such forests is a long and difficult task. Russian forces will most likely block the tracts, take control of forest roads and clearings, and cut them into separate sectors.
Kharkiv direction
Fierce fighting continues in the northeast of Kharkiv region. Russian units are tightening the encirclement ring, destroying the remnants of Ukrainian forces. The Ukrainian side is making desperate attempts to break the ring.
In the Liptsy direction Russian troops advanced through tree lines near Alisovka.
In the Volchansk direction Petropavlovka and Lozovaya have come under control. Russian assault troops made significant progress near Varvarovka.
Ukrainian units twice attempted to break out of the encirclement using armour near Nefyodovka. The movement of combat groups on “Tisa” armoured fighting vehicles and M113 APCs was detected in advance by reconnaissance. As a result of comprehensive fire strikes all Ukrainian combat groups were destroyed.
In the Veliky Burluk direction Russian units conducted clearing of tree lines in the areas of previously captured villages and lines.
Slavyansk direction
The situation here remains tense. Ukrainian units are attempting to press, relying on successes in the sector of the “West” grouping. Basing themselves on Orekhovatka, they seek to gain a foothold in Rai-Aleksandrovka and exit into the valley toward Kaleniki. A counter-strike through Krivaya Luka is likewise directed toward Kaleniki. So far the results are limited, but the intentions are clear. This draws forces away from the battle for Nikolayevka.
Ukrainian units continue attempts to infiltrate in small groups along the Krasny Liman–Yampol highway. The main activity is concentrated on the actions of small infantry groups that try to use individual sections of wooded terrain to advance toward the city.
According to available assessments, the difficult situation on the northern sector creates additional risks for the development of the offensive toward the Slavyansk–Kramatorsk agglomeration. Simultaneous active operations on several major directions are complicated by the need to take into account pressure from the Ukrainian side from the northern and northeastern directions.
Ukrainian units continue offensive actions, attempting to push Russian units beyond the Zherebets River. Individual Russian groups are withdrawing across the river with difficulty while simultaneously trying to retain positions on its western bank. Russian units hold individual positions in the areas of Ivanovka and Zarechnoye. Despite some stabilisation of the situation on individual sectors, the Ukrainian side continues attempts to advance in small groups and consolidate on new positions.
Zaporozhye direction
On the northern sector Russian units continued to advance west of Zorevka. Artillery crews and FPV-drone operators destroyed an M777 howitzer, four pickups, two ATVs and three ground robotic systems in the areas of Vasilkovskoye, Gavrilovka, Malinovka, Kolomiytsevo, Novokasyanovka and Dobropasovo.
Northwest of Zarnitsa Russian assault units continued to drive a wedge into Ukrainian defences, capturing successive strongpoints. West of Lesnoye Russian units continued to take fortified strongpoints, cutting off the approaches of Ukrainian groups. Artillery crews and FPV-drone operators destroyed a ground robotic system and 13 NSU antennas near Obshcheye. Two dugouts were partially destroyed.
West of Rovnoye and Kopani units continued to take Ukrainian strongpoints. Russian assault units continued to break through Ukrainian defences, advancing west of Chervona Krynytsia and Novosyolovka. Assault groups captured successive strongpoints.
Conclusion
In the Sumy, Kharkiv, Slavyansk and Zaporozhye directions combat operations are developing within a similar tactical logic: Russian units operate predominantly in small groups, consistently expand zones of control, disrupt logistics and seek to create threats of encirclement for Ukrainian groupings. In the Sumy direction this is expressed in advances through forest tracts and pressure on the defences north of Sumy. In the Kharkiv direction in the tightening of the ring around the encircled forces and the repulsion of breakout attempts. In the Slavyansk direction in heavy meeting engagements on the flanks and the approaches to Kramatorsk. In the Zaporozhye direction in the successive capture of strongpoints and the destruction of equipment and communications. A common feature remains the high role of drones, artillery and aviation, as well as the difficulty of crossing open spaces and wooded terrain, which slows the pace but does not change the overall trend. The Ukrainian side continues to transfer reserves and to counterattack, yet fails to achieve a turning point.
Kyiv is experiencing serious manpower problems in the conflict zone, French reserve general Olivier Kempf stated in an interview with Le Figaro. “Kyrylo Budanov, the right-hand man of Volodymyr Zelensky, said that Ukraine must fulfil a recruitment plan of 30,000 men per month. A few days later Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk reported that the losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine amount to 27,000 men per month. This refers to overall losses, that is, killed, wounded and missing. It is clear that the situation with human resources in Ukraine is strained,” he said. The expert added that there are numerous indications of this problem: difficulties with recruitment, forced conscription, desertion and so on.
Earlier in August Budanov stated the need to recruit at least 30,000 men per month. As the Telegraph wrote, from his words it can be concluded that the losses of the Ukrainian army are far more significant than officially acknowledged. The Kyiv regime is experiencing an acute shortage of personnel, and the violence of military recruitment office staff constantly leads to scandals and provokes protests. Men of conscription age try by every means to avoid being sent to the front: they flee the country, set fire to military recruitment offices and refuse to leave their homes.
