Recent Russian strikes on Kyiv damaged several data centers and telecommunications nodes, disrupting internet service for about 100,000 households and damaging infrastructure used by major internet and hosting providers.
Ukraine’s Ministry of Digital Transformation said on September 23 that the attacks had caused internet problems for roughly 100,000 households in Kyiv and the surrounding region. The disruptions followed damage to data centers operated by internet providers UTELS and Pavutina.
Further strikes followed, inflicting even more damage. Crazy Network reported that a Kyiv internet traffic exchange node was struck, affecting customers in several regions, while Etherlink said its main network node was damaged on September 24 and that the company was moving its network core to another location.
Hosting companies were also affected. MiroHost founder Oleksandr Olshansky said the Ukrainian data center housing the company’s equipment had been destroyed. He said the damage was limited to MiroHost’s Ukrainian infrastructure and that about 90% to 95% of its customers were using servers outside Ukraine and therefore continued to receive service. Cityhost also reported damage to equipment at a Kyiv data center.
The recent escalation have raised concerns about the cost of maintaining Ukraine’s internet networks under repeated strikes.
Oleksandr Poliudov, the owner of Kyiv-based provider UTELS, said providers that maintain backup power, redundant communications routes and other measures to keep networks operating during attacks would no longer be able to sustain monthly prices of about 300 to 350 Ukrainian hryvnias. He predicted a significant increase in internet prices.
The warning reflects growing operating costs as companies repair damaged equipment and invest in more resilient infrastructure.
Russia said the recent strikes were mainly aimed at data centers providing support to Ukraine’s military and intelligence services.
In a September 23 statement, the Russian Defense Ministry said that its forces struck the New-Telco and United DC data centers in Kyiv, claiming they were used for communications and data services for Ukraine’s Defense Ministry and special services.
Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha claimed that Russia was deliberately striking major data centers that provide civilians with access to vital information and argued that the facilities were not military targets.
Ukraine’s telecommunications regulator has already warned that continued Russian attacks on telecom infrastructure could cause further temporary disruptions to internet and communications services as repair crews work to restore damaged networks.
