The Russian military has encircled Ukrainian positions in Dobropillya in the Donetsk region, Russia’s Defense Ministry announced on September 22, confirming a new advance around the strategically important city.
In a statement, the ministry said units of Russia’s Central Grouping of Forces had completed the encirclement and were advancing toward the nearby settlement of Oleksandrivka. It also revealed that Kyiv forces inside the encircled area included elements of the 4th and 15th National Guard brigades and the 425th Separate Assault Regiment, known as Skala.
The ministry said later in its daily briefing that Russian forces had foiled several attempts by Kyiv forces to “break out” of Dobropillya. At least 50 Ukrainian troops have been “neutralized” near the city over the last 24 hours, according to the ministry.
Russian forces have been pressing toward Dobropillya from several directions, including the south and northeast. Russian military sources have reported advances around the city in recent weeks, while Ukrainian forces have continued to hold positions in the area.
The fighting around Dobropillya is part of Russia’s effort to approach the fortified Ukrainian positions farther north and west, including the Sloviansk-Kramatorsk area. The push toward the city is meant to envelop Ukraine’s Donetsk defensive belt from the southwest.
The latest Russian advance comes five days after Ukrainian 3rd Army Corps commander Andrii Biletskyi claimed that Russian infiltration near Dobropillya had been stopped and that the situation remained difficult but under control. He warned at the time, however, that Russian forces could attempt to renew their advance.
The successful encirclement of Dobropillya represents a significant development. Kyiv forces in the city are now reportedly cut off.
A similar Russian offensive is under way around Orikhiv in the Zaporizhzhia region. Russian forces from the Eastern Grouping of Forces have conducted repeated infiltrations around the city and attempted to approach it from several directions. Ukrainian defenses there could collapse very soon.
