Iran has successfully tested a new weapon against a United States aircraft carrier, a spokesman for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said on September 21, without identifying the weapon or saying whether the ship was hit.
IRGC spokesman Hossein Mohebbi said the test was part of the Islamic Republic’s efforts to expand its military capabilities.
“Typically, I should not disclose details about new weapons; however, as the world has seen, we are constantly increasing our military capabilities and producing and testing new weapons,” Mohebbi said, according to Fars News Agency.
“The case in question was one of our tests against an aircraft carrier, and it was successful,” he added.
Mohebbi warned that Iran would use the weapon again in the event of another U.S. attack, noting that Tehran would change both its weapons and the locations it targets.
“We will introduce new weapons with novel capabilities into the arena, and the world will be surprised,” Mohebbi said.
“Our targets will no longer necessarily be the former ones. We have new targets that have not yet been struck,” he added.
The IRGC spokesman also warned, “If a new attack occurs, we will use other weapons in addition to this weapon” against the U.S.
Iran already fields anti-ship ballistic missiles, including the Khalij Fars and Zolfaghar Basir, which have reported ranges of about 300 and 700 kilometers respectively.
Tehran has also sought additional anti-ship capabilities from abroad. Reuters reported in February that Iran was nearing a deal to acquire Chinese-made CM-302 supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles. The report, based on six people familiar with the negotiations, said the missiles have a range of about 290 kilometers and are designed to evade ship defenses by flying at low altitude and high speed. China later said it was unaware of the reported talks.
The Financial Times reported this month that Russia had been helping Iran develop supersonic cruise missiles under a program known as C430L. The cooperation began in 2023 and continued into 2026, with Iranian engineers developing and flight-testing a ramjet propulsion system, according to the report.
The recent remarks by the IRGC spokesman indicate that Iran has either developed a new generation of anti-ship ballistic missiles or has effectively put anti-ship supersonic cruise missiles into service.
In any case, the remarks were clearly meant as a warning to the U.S., which appears to be preparing for a new escalation against the Islamic Republic.
