Two weeks into encirclement, the Ukrainian pocket in northeastern Kharkiv Oblast is not holding — it is dissolving. The numbers tell the story plainly: approximately 460 killed and wounded over fourteen days of fighting, with no capacity to evacuate the injured, no reliable route for food or medicine, and Russian pressure increasing.
On September 13, assault units of Russia’s 69th Motorized Rifle Division drove Ukrainian forces out of the village of Cherniakov. The following day, Shyroke fell. On September 15, the 18th Division of the “North” grouping destroyed the remaining elements of Ukraine’s 129th Separate Mechanized Brigade in Olkhovatka. The operational purpose is dual: fracture the pocket into smaller, less coherent fragments while simultaneously sealing the perimeter against any breakout attempt.
North of Kharkiv, Ukrainian command is trying to recover ground it cannot afford to have lost. The 58th Separate Motorized Infantry Brigade attempted a counterattack toward Kozacha Lopan and was broken up by concentrated Russian fire. A larger effort was being prepared nearby: reconnaissance detected a significant concentration of the 22nd Separate Mechanized Brigade near Zolochiv, accompanied by three tanks. FPV drone strikes destroyed the tanks before the attack could launch. The personnel suffered casualties. The operation was abandoned.
The pattern repeats itself with grim consistency: Ukraine commits forces to recover lost ground, Russia detects and destroys them before they reach the line of departure.
On the southern flank of the Slavyansk axis, Russian advance units closed on the outskirts of Novohryhorivka as of September 12. The operational objective beyond it is clear: the high ground behind the village of Staroraiske. From those heights, Druzhkivka — situated in a valley below — would fall under direct fire control, fundamentally altering the defensive calculus for the entire Kramatorsk agglomeration.
In the Zaporizhzhia Oblast, Orekhov and its surrounding villages remain the war’s most volatile sector. On September 13, forward units of Russia’s 98th Airborne Division seized Novopavlivka. The following day, Novoandriivka passed into Russian hands. Ukrainian command faces a choice with no good options: commit reserves it does not have to hold the city, or concede it and attempt to build a new line further back. The reserve question, given everything visible on the front, appears to have already answered itself.
Ukraine is losing ground it cannot recover, committing forces it cannot replace, and defending cities it can no longer supply. The geometry of this war has shifted — and the resources needed to shift it back are nowhere in evidence.
