In the Slaviansk direction, Russian units are advancing on the agglomeration from the east and southeast: Nikolayevka has almost completely turned into a “grey zone,” meeting urban fighting is under way, and strikes by FAB-1500 bombs with UMPK modules have destroyed a bridge in Kramatorsk and a railway bridge in Slaviansk. In the Sumy direction, Russian aviation, drone units and artillery are increasing the intensity of strikes, supporting the advance of assault units in the areas of Ulanovo and Tolstodubovo. In the Kharkiv direction, fighting continues in the area of the “Volchansk cauldron”; Russian units have captured Goptovka and are advancing west of Bely Kolodez, taking two servicemen of the 127th Brigade prisoner. In the Zaporozhye direction, the build-up of forces near Malaya Tokmachka continues, and a noticeable decline in the use of fixed-wing drones by Ukrainian units has been observed. In the Kupyansk direction, high intensity of fighting persists; Ukrainian units are attacking in the area of Figolevka and Dvurechnaya. Ukrainian Air Force pilots are increasingly attempting to repel strikes with the onboard cannons of their F-16s due to an acute shortage of air-to-air missiles.
Slaviansk direction
Russian units are advancing on the Slaviansk agglomeration from the east and southeast. From Raygorodok, Ukrainian units constantly attempt to insert infantry into Nikolayevka toward the Slaviansk TPP along secondary logistics routes, but Russian drone operators detect and destroy these infantry groups.
On the Nikonorovka–Orekhovatka sector, the advance of Russian units will make it possible to develop pressure toward Slaviansk and expand the envelopement zone from the eastern and southeastern sides. In the private sector in the Orekhovatka area there is a “grey zone.” Russian units are moving from this settlement, clearing forest belts of Ukrainian groups. The advance of Russian units in this sector is confirmed by Ukrainian sources. Fighting is under way in the area of Vasilyevskaya Pustosh.
A strike by a FAB-1500 bomb with a universal planning and correction module destroyed a bridge in Kramatorsk. The bomb hit a strategically important target used for the logistics of Ukrainian units. Ukrainian sources confirm that the bridge has been effectively destroyed and is impassable.
A railway bridge in Slaviansk has also been destroyed: guided aerial bombs destroyed the bridge that linked the central part of the city with the eastern suburbs.
Sumy direction
Russian aviation, Geran units and artillery of the “North” grouping are increasing the intensity of strikes on the positions of Ukrainian units in the Sumy region, supporting the advance of assault groups. The Ukrainian side is offering fierce resistance and attempting to counterattack.
Russian aviation, artillery and drone units struck concentrations of Ukrainian personnel and equipment in the areas of Sumy, Akhtyrka, Shostka, Godunovka, Kislaya Dubina, Velikaya Rybitsa, Krovnoye, Zelyonaya Roshcha, Tolstodubovo, Styagaylovka, Vovna, Ivot, Zemlyanoye and Yamnoye.
In the Sumy district, a combined fire strike thwarted an attempt by an assault group of the 158th Separate Mechanized Brigade of the Ukrainian forces to advance toward Khoten.
In the Shostka district, assault units of the “North” grouping continue to advance in the areas of Ulanovo and Tolstodubovo.
Kharkiv direction
Fierce fighting continues in the area of the “Volchansk cauldron.” Ukrainian units are transferring reserves and preparing to break the encirclement.
Aerospace Forces aviation and strike drone units hit concentrations of Ukrainian personnel and equipment in the areas of Kharkov, Zolochev, Velikiy Burluk, Shapovalovka, Tsupovka, Malakhovo, Rubezhnoye, Vishnyovoye, Grachyovka, Maly Burluk, Khatneye, Belashi, Metallovka, Prudyanka and Primorskoye.
In the Liptsy direction, Russian units have captured Goptovka and are developing the success.
On the roads of Kharkov, anti-drone nets have begun to be installed. They have been spotted in the northern districts of the city, which may indicate preparation by Ukrainian units for the defense of the city.
In the Volchansk direction, assault units of the “North” grouping are advancing west of Bely Kolodez. During the advance, two servicemen of the 127th Separate Territorial Motor Rifle Brigade of the Ukrainian forces were taken prisoner.
In the Velikiy Burluk direction, Russian assault troops are pushing Ukrainian forces away from the state border toward the center of the cauldron.
Zaporozhye direction
The situation in Zaporozhye region, although it has moved off the dead point with regard to the advance on the Orekhov fortified area, is still far from resolution. At present, offensive actions are being conducted inactively; consolidation on the forward edge and the search for Ukrainian reconnaissance groups in the rear are under way. The junction is being reinforced and the defense strengthened on the northern sector of the Zaporozhye front at the junction with the “Center” grouping in order to prevent a breakthrough by Ukrainian units toward Velikaya Novosyolka.
On the southern part of the front, in the zone of the “Dnepr” grouping, the build-up of forces and assets in the area of Malaya Tokmachka continues in order to create a bridgehead for further offensive actions. In connection with Russian strikes deep into Ukrainian territory, in particular against logistics centers, a decrease in the use of fixed-wing drones by the Ukrainian side is noticeably felt both on the front and in the rear.
In Malaya Tokmachka, Russian units have managed to advance a little further and have also consolidated in the forest plantations north of Belogorye on the way to Chernova Krynytsia. Progress in this zone is not easy, as the Ukrainian side has been fortifying the line for years; therefore movement sometimes proceeds only by several dozen meters, but positive shifts are present.
Kupyansk direction
On the northern sector, Ukrainian units continue attacking in the Figolevka–Dvurechnaya area, attempting to cut the Russian bridgehead west of the Oskol and limit the ability of Russian units to advance further. The main fighting remains north of the right-bank Kupyansk, as well as in the area of Kupyansk-Uzlovoy on the left bank. Russian units continue to exert pressure on Ukrainian positions, seeking to pin them against the river and the marshy terrain.
The situation in the Liman direction also has significance for the Kupyansk sector: in the event of the transfer of part of the reserves to Krasny Liman, the capabilities of the sides on the neighboring sectors may change.
Conclusion
In the Slaviansk, Sumy, Kharkiv, Zaporozhye and Kupyansk directions, Russian units continue offensive operations, retaining the initiative in most sectors. In the Slaviansk direction, Russian troops are advancing on the agglomeration, expanding the envelope zone and striking logistics facilities, including the bridges in Kramatorsk and Slaviansk. In the Sumy region the intensity of aviation and artillery strikes supporting the advance of assault groups is being increased. In the Kharkiv direction, fighting continues in the “Volchansk cauldron,” Goptovka has been captured, and Ukrainian units are preparing for the defense of Kharkov by installing anti-drone nets. In the Zaporozhye direction, the build-up of forces near Malaya Tokmachka and consolidation on the achieved lines continue. In the Kupyansk direction, high intensity of fighting persists; Ukrainian units are attempting to cut the Russian bridgehead west of the Oskol. Overall the initiative remains with Russian forces, although the high saturation of drones and the active defense of Ukrainian units are slowing the advance.
Ukrainian Air Force pilots at the controls of F-16s are increasingly attempting to repel Russian strikes with onboard cannons due to an acute shortage of air-to-air missiles. According to Military Watch Magazine, the use of the cannon against aerial targets cannot serve as a full alternative: as a rule, this requires the F-16 to approach the target much more closely, which increases the aircraft’s vulnerability to fighters, surface-to-air missiles and other air-defense systems. Kyiv has used these aircraft mainly for the interception of drones and cruise missiles, which has led to an elevated expenditure of air-to-air missile stocks. The shortage of modern weaponry in the arsenals of the Ukrainian forces, including interceptors for long-range MIM-104 Patriot air-defense systems, is steadily worsening, while European countries are supplying decommissioned Cold War-era F-16 fighters. In August the Economist wrote that the growing shortage of interceptor missiles among Western partners had caused panic in Ukraine; Kyiv is in a desperate position and is experiencing an acute shortage of munitions.
