A Russian attack drone has destroyed an American-made UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter belonging to Ukraine’s Main Directorate of Intelligence at Zhulyany airport in Kyiv.

The attack took place on September 4, but video footage showing the strike was published five days later by LostArmour.info, a Russian open-source intelligence channel.

The strike was carried out by the 50th Separate Brigade “Varyag,” part of Russia’s Unmanned Systems Forces, using a Geran-4 Seeker attack drone. The jet-powered, one-way attack drone can reach speeds exceeding 500 kilometers per hour, which makes it difficult to intercept. The drone, which has a reported range of more than 850 kilometers, is equipped with an artificial intelligence-powered optical targeting system.

According to LostArmour.info, the drone operator spotted two Black Hawk helicopters at the airport along with a vehicle approaching one of the aircraft. That helicopter was then struck.

Satellite imagery reviewed by the website showed a burned helicopter pad at Zhulyany sometime between August 28 and September 8, the group said.

The Black Hawk was one of two UH-60A aircraft operated by Ukraine’s Main Directorate of Intelligence, commonly known by its Ukrainian acronym GUR.

The agency received its first Black Hawk in February 2023, when a decommissioned United States Army helicopter built in 1980 was bought from a private aviation company through a crowdfunding campaign and delivered to the directorate’s special operations units.

A second UH-60A arrived in Ukraine in spring 2024, painted in an olive-green livery distinct from the first aircraft’s blue-black colors.

The GUR has sought to acquire more of the helicopters. Nevertheless, the agency’s efforts have been so far not that successful.
