Several United States warplanes were damaged during Iranian strikes on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan carried out overnight into September 9, CBS News reported, citing sources familiar with the incident.
The sources said around eight F-15 fighter jets sustained minor damage in the attack, though they were later restored to operational status. An A-10 Thunderbolt close air support jet, commonly known as the Warthog, was also hit and reportedly suffered the loss of a wing, according to the sources. No American personnel were killed in the attack.
CBS News also reported that U.S. forces in Jordan launched more than 30 Patriot missiles in an effort to intercept the Iranian attacks.
The attack came after the U.S. announced on September 8 that it had carried out strikes against five Iranian tankers in response to Iran’s targeting of a U.S. Navy vessel. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps later stated that it had launched attacks on eight tankers, two warships, and the U.S. base in Jordan.
Separately, a video that surfaced online on September 9 revealed that several American HH-60M medical evacuation helicopters were also damaged in recent Iranian strikes.
The helicopters are seen in the video being evacuated on trucks. It is unclear, however, if the helicopters were hit in the latest attack on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base. Some unverified reports indicate that they were damaged at Prince Hassan Air Base during a previous Iranian strike.
The reported damage in recent Iranian strikes on Jordan add to the growing number of American aircraft affected during the war with Iran.
According to the latest tally, the U.S. has recorded 96 military aircraft losses, including 48 MQ-9 Reaper combat drones, 13 F-15s, eight KC-135 Stratotankers aerial tankers, four MH-6 Little Birds helicopters, four Black Hawks, and three A-10 Thunderbolt IIs, among other aircraft.
