U.S. President Donald Trump is aggressively promoting Syria as a revolutionary alternative corridor to the blockaded Strait of Hormuz in a bid to soothe volatile global oil markets. However, technical realities, immense financial costs, and Syria’s extreme military vulnerability to Iran turn the proposed overland bypass into little more than a geopolitical fantasy.
Trump’s latest campaign to reframe Middle Eastern energy logistics was sparked by a headline in The Washington Post detailing Syria’s ambitions to leverage its Mediterranean coast as a trade hub.
Reacting directly to the report on Truth Social on September 3, Trump posted: “This is GREAT! Syria is pitching itself as an alternative to the Strait of Hormuz.”
He doubled down on the concept the next day while speaking to reporters at the White House, insisting that the strategic importance of the Persian Gulf chokepoint is rapidly evaporating.
“A lot of alternatives are being made to the Hormuz Strait. The Hormuz Strait is not what it used to be,” Trump said, asserting that new energy routes are aggressively being developed. “Iran is going to end up, if they don’t get smart, really smart… with a harmless Strait that’s not very necessary anymore.”
The report that caught Trump’s eye outlined an ambitious pivot by Syria’s new Islamist-led government under President Ahmed al-Sharaa to capitalize on the ongoing U.S.-Israeli war with Iran.
According to the report, roughly 5,000 tanker trucks are currently hauling crude oil day and night across 1,600 kilometers of Syrian desert, connecting refineries in Basra, Iraq, to Syria’s Mediterranean port at Baniyas. The operation—which began in April as a temporary experiment—has been backed by a U.S. diplomatic push for a proposed $5.7 billion, Chevron-led pipeline capable of moving 2 million barrels per day along the same transit line.
Nevertheless, treating Syria as a quick, magical fix to the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz collapses under scrutiny on nearly every level.
First, the technical and financial obstacles are far greater than the White House suggests. While administration officials have touted a two-and-a-half-year timeline for the Chevron project, an August 17 report by Reuters citing industry sources revealed that a new Iraq-Syria pipeline is at least four to five years away from completion and will cost upward of $15 billion.
Existing 1950s-era pipeline infrastructure across eastern Syria lies in complete ruins following years of bombing and ISIS sabotage, requiring energy consortiums to build entirely from scratch across unmined desert terrain.
Second, the assumption that Syria offers a “safe” detour away from the conflict in the Gulf ignores basic regional geography and military realities.
As Gabriel Mitchell, an energy specialist at the German Marshall Fund, noted in the Post report, physical security for hundreds of kilometers of fixed energy infrastructure remains an unsolved hurdle.
Far from being isolated from regional conflict, Syria is completely exposed to Iranian power. Truck convoys continue to operate through Syria primarily because Tehran currently permits its neighbor, Iraq, to maintain a revenue-generating export path. Should hostilities broaden in the region, Iran possesses the immediate military capacity to choke off the Syrian corridor entirely.
Unlike the Strait of Hormuz—where the U.S. military and heavily armed Gulf monarchies can deploy sophisticated air defense umbrella networks—a 1,600-kilometer static pipeline running through western Iraq and eastern Syria would sit defenseless.
The pipeline would traverse territory heavily influenced by Iran-backed Iraqi factions and active ISIS cells, presenting an array of easy targets for Iranian ballistic missiles, one-way attack drones, or sabotage.
Logistically and strategically, Syria cannot replace the maritime volume of the Strait of Hormuz, nor can it offer a secure sanctuary from Iranian reach. By projecting the Syrian project as an imminent alternative, Trump is leveraging a market-soothing narrative to project economic stability, even as energy experts recognize the plan as functionally unviable for the foreseeable future.

no oil or insurance corporation will enter the region without guarantee of success. even the rothschild dynasty will not fund this propaganda stunt. another excuse to rob the us treasury ? boondoggle.
my defenseless americunt anuz has been torn by zionist hillbilly peniz for 49 yrs derp incel
america produces more oil than it uses yet the surplus is sold on the world market far above the cost of production, profits are absorbed by private corporations. while foreign oil produced by american corporations in the mid-east is subsidized by taxpayers with trillions of dollars worth of endless wars and is sold on world markets to the benefit of private corporations who pay almost no taxes leading to the 1.5 trillion deficit.
and on top of all your acute observations which are without question truth… because they are being kicked out of the gcc… the u.$. and it’s currency will not make it past the next year. an prophetic to this statement is watching the polarity at opposite ends with the u.$. treasury secretary demanding “0” interest rate to 00 while the new federal re$erve chairman speaks to a rate hike?… either way this $hip is doomed and has already hit it’$ iceberg!… tik toc.
the us clowns plan to mine the moon and asteroids too, and remind the markets of this every time a key commodity like gold gets too high.
this pipeline fantasy to replace hormuz is the same sort of market psychology manipulation
there was no problem with the hormuze before the orange ape and the zio child killers attacked iran.
