Recent Iranian missile and drone strikes damaged three United States military bases in Iraq, Bahrain and Jordan, according to fresh images from the European Space Agency’s Sentinel-2 satellite.
At Erbil Airport in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region, where a U.S. military base is located, satellite imagery taken after the recent Iranian strikes shows a burn scar near a troop billeting area. An American surveillance aerostat previously stationed near the base’s command-and-control site is no longer visible in the images.
Meanwhile, at Naval Support Activity Bahrain, imagery shows a burn scar on a warehouse. The base is home to the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet.
At Prince Hassan Air Base in Jordan, which hosts U.S. MQ-4C Triton surveillance drones, imagery initially showed a scorch mark on the runway and burn scars near several hardened aircraft shelters. Imagery taken a day later no longer shows the runway mark, suggesting repairs may have been made.
Iran carried out two waves of strikes against American forces in the region on September 2 and 3 in response to deadly U.S. attacks that targeted its southern and southeastern regions over the weekend.
One of the attacks targeted a residential home hosting a wedding ceremony in the city of Kouhestak, in Hormozgan Province’s Sirik County, which killed five civilians, including a 4-year-old child, and wounded more than 70 others. Other strikes claimed the lives of 13 service members from the regular army and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, including three pilots.
The U.S. refrained from responding to the last Iranian wave of strikes, despite earlier reports of President Donald Trump’s administration approving a new bombing campaign to degrade the Islamic Republic’s military capabilities close to the Strait of Hormuz, and even adopting a “tanker for tanker” policy to deter Tehran.
The sudden de-escalation by Washington may be the result of unreported progress in indirect talks with Tehran, but it could also be the result of recent Iranian strikes, which once again demonstrated the Islamic Republic’s ability to strike back.
