A political dispute has emerged in the wake of an arson attack on BATS, a defense company specialized in the development and production of electronic systems, at the town of Sart-Tilman near Liège, after the incident was claimed by a group calling itself “Black Fire.”
The fire broke out overnight between August 31 and September 1, with three separate points of ignition identified at the site. A judicial investigation has been opened.
The attack was claimed in an email signed “Black Fire” and received on September 2 by Qu4tre, which first reported the story. The group described its actions as explicitly political, saying it targeted BATS because of its ties to Israel Aerospace Industries and its general activities in the defense sector.
Defense Minister Theo Francken, of the Flemish nationalist N-VA party, attributed the arson to “the far left.” He also implicated the Workers’ Party of Belgium (PTB/PVDA), calling it the “political arm” of such violence.
PTB president Raoul Hedebouw rejected the accusations, saying his party has no connection to the fires and denouncing what he called an attempt to “criminalize” his political movement.
The BATS fire was the latest in a series of incidents reported at facilities linked to the European defense sector in recent weeks.
On August 31, fire broke out at a facility owned by Poland’s WB Electronics. Prior to that, on August 10, a blast rocked an ammunition factory in Bulgaria owned by EMCO. Later, on August 13, another blast was reported at a facility owned by KNDS Ammo Italy.
All three companies that had previously faced incidents had ties to Ukraine, unlike BATS, which mainly produces radar and electronic warfare systems.
