The Houthis (Ansar Allah) fired ballistic missiles on August 27 at a town in Yemen’s western Hodeidah province and at islands overlooking key Red Sea shipping lanes, according to Yemeni pro-government sources, while the Yemeni navy shot down a Houthi drone over the Red Sea.
At least one missile struck a town near the city of al-Khawkhah in Hodeidah, the government-aligned Joint Forces said. The armed faction did not report any casualties from the strike.
A military official later told the government-run Saba news agency that Houthi forces had also targeted, with ballistic missiles, several islands overlooking maritime trade routes. The official did not specify which islands were hit or provide details on damage.
The same official said Yemen’s navy intercepted and downed a Houthi drone over the Red Sea, though further details of the interception were not immediately available.
The Houthis announced a “maritime blockade” against Saudi Arabia last month, and since then, the group has carried out a series of attacks targeting Saudi airports, oil facilities, Yemeni government forces, infrastructure in the country, and tankers in the Red Sea.
Fresh satellite images from the European Union’s Sentinel-2 revealed that recent Houthi strikes have damaged a large storage tank at Aramco’s Jazan Bulk Plant, while taking out at least nine oil storage tanks and one Horton sphere tank at the nearby Jazan Oil Refinery, also owned by the Saudi oil giant.

In the face of this escalation, The New York Times reported on August 27 that Saudi Arabia may be preparing for a renewed war against the Houthis.
A Saudi official told the newspaper that the kingdom prefers peace, but is ready for war with the group, and will protect itself by any means necessary.
If the Houthis continue to escalate their attacks, the unnamed official added, the kingdom would be willing to conduct strikes to support the forces of the Yemeni government — effectively, a motley coalition of anti-Houthi forces — in its battle against the group.
The current confrontation has pushed Yemen’s ceasefire closer to collapse than at any point since it took effect more than four years ago.
