Russian troops are now fitting fiber-optic-guided first-person view (FPV) suicide quadcopters with microphones, letting the drones stay completely hidden near roads in the special military zone and listen for approaching Ukrainian military vehicles instead of needing a clear line of sight to spot them.
While the ambush tactic itself isn’t new, FPV drones previously needed a clear line of sight to a road so the camera could watch for a target. That meant they had to be positioned somewhere visible, or a second drone had to fly overhead to spot movement and call in the strike. Either way, the drone was easier for the other side to detect.
The microphone removes that constraint. The FPV drone can tuck itself fully out of sight, behind cover where its camera could never see the road, and still detect a target by sound.
Once it picks up an engine nearby, the operator switches on the camera, takes off, confirms the target, and engages it within seconds.
Footage of one such FPV drone engaging a pickup truck carrying Ukrainian troops, somewhere in the special military zone, surfaced online on August 15.
The tactic is possible because fiber-optic control cables remove the need for a radio signal, which also makes the drone essentially immune to electronic warfare means.
Its worth noting that Russia is scaling up the production of FPV drones in general. RuAviation reported in February that manufacturer KB Ushkuynik alone turns out an estimated 50,000 fiber-optic drones a month, with a smaller producer, KB Hortensia, adding roughly 3,000 more.
In some Russian units, fiber-optic models now make up 60% or more of the drone fleet, versus around 15% on the Ukrainian side. Real totals aren’t public; even RuAviation notes the figures come from the manufacturers themselves.
Across all FPV types, not just fiber-optic ones, Ukrainian intelligence cited by Bloomberg in June put Russia’s 2026 production target at 7.3 million drones.

now the next logical step after this is to figure out how to automate this process. where s drone operator does not have to be staring at a screen all day. this needs to be automated where a drone as soon as it heats the sound of an engine it takes of and attacks.
