Russia’s strike campaign against Ukrainian infrastructure has entered a more sophisticated phase — one focused not just on destruction, but on making reconstruction impossible. Geran strike drones recently hit a repair and recovery train and a locomotive in the Odessa Region settlements of Rozdilna and Stari Shompoly. The logic is deliberate: disabling Ukraine’s ability to fix what has been broken compounds the original damage many times over.
The drone arsenal behind these strikes is scaling at a pace that defies easy comprehension. According to Ukrainian military intelligence, Russia is now producing approximately 2,800 Geran-2 drones and around 3,000 Geran-4 and Geran-5 jet-powered variants per month — meaning jet-propelled production has already overtaken the original combustion-engine model. The growth curve is staggering: 180 jet-powered Gerans were launched against Ukraine across all of 2025; in the first half of 2026 alone, that number reached 1,400. Average monthly production of the jet variant has increased fifteenfold in a matter of months, and two-hundredfold since 2025. For Ukraine’s mobile air defense teams — already stretched thin — faster, harder-to-intercept drones arriving in greater numbers represent a threat that no amount of Western interceptor deliveries can fully address.
The expanding drone campaign and the advances on the ground are not separate stories. They are two instruments of the same strategy — and both are moving in Russia’s favor.
North of Sumy, a new Russian bridgehead is forming. On August 13, units of the “North” grouping seized the border village of Rohozne, opening another pressure point that Ukrainian command will be forced to address with reserves it can barely spare. Every new breach demands a response and every response thins the line somewhere else.
In the eastern Kharkiv Region, the advance continues without a pause. On August 12, forward assault units seized the village of Vodiane — a gain that brings Russian forces closer to the Ukrainian logistics hub at Olkhovatka and further tightens the operational picture for Kyiv in this sector.
On the Sloviansk axis, the southern sector remains the most active. Reports confirm Russian control over the village of Petrivka, continuing the formation of a southern pincer aimed at Druzhkivka. The city is one of the key defensive anchors in the entire Kramatorsk urban agglomeration, and Ukrainian command will commit whatever it has to hold it. Yet since the fighting for Kostiantinovka began, Kyiv has not launched a single meaningful counterattack against the advancing Russian forces on this axis — a telling absence.
Russia is simultaneously destroying Ukraine’s infrastructure, degrading its repair capacity, and advancing on multiple ground axes. Ukraine is reacting, redistributing, and hoping that the line holds. That is not a strategy — it is a slow unraveling, and the pace is picking up.
