President Donald Trump declared on August 10 that the United States will demand compensation from Iran for the Americans it has killed and wounded over the years after Tehran reportedly insisted on similar reparations for the damages caused by the last war.
“I see that Representatives of the Islamic Republic of Iran are asking for compensation for the damage done to them during the last five month Military Conflict (started because, THEY WILL NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON), even though it was never mentioned in any of our negotiations or meetings!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“But it is an interesting idea because now I am likewise demanding compensation from Iran, for all of the people that they have killed and gravely wounded with their roadside bombs and many conflicts, for which they are famous, as led initially by General Soleimani, including the families of those killed on the USS Cole, and thousands of others killed in combat,” he continued.
“Additionally, compensation should be paid to the families of the hundreds of thousands of innocent protestors that Iran has killed over the last 50 years, not to mention the 52,000 that have been killed in the last five months,” the U.S. president added.
“I have instructed my representatives to put this firmly into any, and all, future negotiations. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” he concluded.
Soon after in a follow-up post, Trump added that the Islamic Republic should also be responsible “for the damages and death caused to the people of Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and Gaza.”
The remarks came just a day after the U.S. president said Washington is relying on economic pressure rather than new military strikes to push Iran towards making a deal.
“We are low-keying it,” Trump said in an Axios interview, pointing to a more cautious approach after months of conflict and adding that Washington is “only semi-negotiating” with Tehran while monitoring the toll the war has taken on Iran’s economy.
He added that the Islamic Republic is in “very bad shape” financially, citing high inflation and difficulty paying its own troops, and credited a U.S. naval blockade in place since April with deepening that pressure.
Trump also said falling oil prices, now just above $75 a barrel, have eased the war’s economic impact on American consumers.
“It will work out. It always works out. It’s like a chess game,” he said.
Trump’s remarks come as talks mediated by Oman over reopening the Strait of Hormuz to shipping appear close to a breakthrough.
Tehran has stressed, however, that it would not fully reopen the waterway until the U.S. “corrects its behaviour,” which includes demands to lift the naval blockade, halt military actions and pay war damages.
This shift highlights the failure of the U.S. military strategy against Iran. And while economic pressure could be more powerful, the harm will not be limited to the Islamic Republic.
With the Strait of Hormuz tightly controlled by Tehran, a prolonged stalemate will eventually impact the global energy market, directly affecting American consumers.
In addition, Iran is unlikely to just sit and tolerate the U.S. economic pressure, especially knowing that the U.S. is struggling on the military side, with shortages reported in missiles and interceptors. The Islamic Republic could escalate militarily again, dragging Washington back to a limited confrontation.
