A senior Iranian military commander on July 31 warned regional states against siding with the United States, saying any country that serves as a “defensive shield” for Washington would “burn in the fire of war.”
Major General Ali Abdollahi, commander of Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, accused the U.S. of accelerating toward a “widespread warmongering” campaign in the region, calling it part of what he described as a strategy of “expansion and illegitimate domination across the entire region.”
“We explicitly declare that Muslim countries must exercise foresight, monitor America’s crimes, and reconsider cooperation and alignment with the United States,” Abdollahi said, adding that failure to do so would leave nations exposed to the consequences of backing Washington.
The general pointed to Iran’s recent conflict with the U.S. as evidence that Washington would stop at nothing — “mischief or destruction” — to achieve what he called its “satanic objectives,” even if doing so came at the expense of Muslim nations’ interests.
He argued that the U.S. is exploiting the capital, infrastructure, and strategic resources of regional states to prop up its own military, while simultaneously bolstering the armed forces of Israel, which he described in language accusing it of targeting children and engaging in terrorism.
Abdollahi also claimed that Iran, its military, and allied regional militant groups — collectively known as the “Axis of Resistance” — had proven that the traditional balance of power in the region no longer applies, asserting that both the U.S. and Israel had failed to achieve their strategic aims against Iran.
The warning came following a series of reports by major American media outlets that the U.S. and Israel may be imminently launching an extensive wave of attacks against Iran’s civilian infrastructure, including power plants and petrochemical manufacturers.
President Donald Trump has yet to give final authorisation for the attack that could potentially last up to two weeks and aim to cut electricity across Iran’s capital, Tehran, and create disruptions across the country.
In an apparent reaction to the Iranian warning, U.S. embassies in several Middle Eastern capitals have already warned American citizens to beware of an “unforeseen escalation” and urged them to be ready to leave.
“Americans in the region should consider departing, or be prepared to depart should there be escalation,” said a security alert, versions of which were posted on social media by the U.S. missions in Amman, Jerusalem and Baghdad.
The messages urged citizens to check flight details and to follow safety advice from local authorities in case of escalation.
“Americans currently in the Middle East should exercise caution and heightened vigilance and should be prepared for flight cancellations, periodic airspace closures, and potential travel disruptions,” it said.
Americans in Jordan were told not to visit U.S. military bases there, which have recently come under Iranian missile attack, and in Israel they were urged to seek the location of the nearest bomb shelter.
“The Iranian regime is unpredictable, as seen by its recent decisions to attack areas in the region without warning or provocations as well as to expand attacks to areas not previously targeted (such as Egypt),” said a post on the U.S. Embassy Jerusalem site.
All in all, the region appears to be on the brink of a major escalation. Any attack by the U.S. and Israel on civilian infrastructure in Iran will provoke a fierce response. The Islamic Republic will strike back against targets of the same nature across the region. Such a response could draw in new sides into the confrontation, namely Gulf states.
A wider regional conflict may be, however, exactly what the U.S. and Israel are looking for, securing funding from Gulf states, and throwing the burden of the fighting on them.
