Two American soldiers were killed in an Iranian ballistic missile attack in Jordan on July 17, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced.
In a statement, the command said two service members were killed, one went missing in action, and four were wounded while defending against Iran’s attacks in Jordan.
The wounded soldiers were taken to Jordanian hospitals and have since been discharged, and “other personnel who were evaluated for minor injuries have returned to duty,” according to the command.
“Out of respect for the families, CENTCOM will withhold additional information, including the identities of the fallen warriors, until 24 hours after the next of kin have been notified,” CENTCOM added.
Earlier in the day, Jordan’s army claimed that its air defenses had shot down ten Iranian missiles with no casualties or damage.
“Air defense systems… intercepted 10 Iranian missiles that had entered Jordanian airspace and were targeting the kingdom’s territory (which) were intercepted and shot down,” the army said in a statement, adding that there were no casualties or material damage.
Still, videos posted to social networks showed multiple impacts, mainly at Muwaffaq al-Salti Air Base, one of the U.S. military’s main expeditionary air hubs in the region, housing dozens of fighter jets and combat drones.
The strikes caused a large fire that burned well into the afternoon of July 18. NASA FIRMS fire-detection data identified two active hotspots on the base: one within a U.S. troop barracks and accommodation area, and another inside a warehouse complex. The American soldiers were most likely killed there.
With the deaths of the two soldiers, the number of American troops confirmed killed in the fighting with Iran has risen to 16.
The deadly strike will likely lead to further escalation against Iran. The limited confrontation that began more than ten days earlier could spark a regional conflict. The Islamic Republic has already announced that the memorandum of understanding signed last month to end the war is over.
