Israel has reportedly shared intelligence with the United States detailing an alleged Iranian plot to assassinate President Donald Trump.
Citing Individuals familiar with the matter, the Wall Street Journal reported on July 9 that Israeli intelligence indicated a new plot was in development to assassinate the U.S. president. The report didn’t specify when the intelligence was relayed, or through what channel.
The Journal noted that Iran has been publicly pledging to assassinate Trump since the U.S. killed Iranian Quds Force Gen. Qassem Soleimani in 2020.
In addition, calls to “kill Trump” featured prominently throughout the mourning ceremonies for Iran’s slain Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Nevertheless, two American officials told Israel’s Channel 12 news that the information was related to general dialogue between Iranian officials on potentially assassinating Trump, rather than a specific plot.
The officials said that they believed Israel gave the information to the U.S. to improve ties between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Trump and to try and influence Washington’s policies on Iran. One of them noted that Israel had given similar information over plans by the Islamic Republic and its allies over the past year.
Reports of the alleged Iranian plot to kill Trump came right after the U.S. exchanged strikes with Iran after the latter was accused of targeting commercial vessels close to the Strait of Hormuz.
Amid the clashes, Trump directed harsh criticism at Tehran, declaring that the memorandum of understanding brokered last month to end the war was “over.” He has since softened that position. Regional mediators — Qatar, Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt and Saudi Arabia — are said to be working behind the scenes to de-escalate tensions and arrange another round of technical talks aimed at salvaging the deal.
The Israeli warning reported by the Journal appears designed to further stoke tensions between Washington and Tehran — hardly surprising given Israel’s evident dissatisfaction with the recent deal.
Channel 12’s report suggests that at least some within the Trump administration recognize what Israel is attempting to achieve by promoting this alleged plot. Even so, that may not be enough to prevent it from influencing the president’s approach to the Islamic Republic going forward.
