Russian Security Forces Foiled Terror Attack Ordered From Syria (Video)

Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) announced on July 3 that it had thwarted a terrorist attack targeting a railway facility in Pyatigorsk in the Stavropol Region.

In a statement, the security service said that a native of a Central Asian country who supports an international terrorist organization was detained.

“The suspect was preparing, on the instructions and under the coordination of a handler based in Syria, to attack a railway transport infrastructure facility in the Stavropol Region using an improvised incendiary device… After carrying out the terrorist attack, he planned to travel to Syria and join the ranks of an international terrorist organization,” the statement reads.

According to the FSB, the suspect photographed the intended target and purchased chemicals to manufacture Molotov cocktails.

A search of his residence after his detention uncovered ready-to-use improvised incendiary devices, as well as communication devices containing instructions from his handler.

The Investigative Department of the FSB Directorate for the Stavropol Region has opened a criminal case for the preparation for a terrorist attack, as well as for the participation in the activities of an organization designated as terrorist in Russia.

Syria remains a central hub for several terrorist organization, even after many of them were supposedly integrated into the country’s new military and security forces following the fall of the regime of former president Bashar al-Assad more than a year ago.

In fact, recent reports revealed that foreigners were still pouring into the country to joints such groups, including from Russia.

Two Russians—one from the Chechen Republic and one from the Republic of Dagestan—were captured last year in Syria’s al-Suwayda Governorate while participating in a government-led attack on Druze forces there.

Both had arrived in Syria after the fall of the Assad regime. One claimed he had come to join Ajnad al-Kavkaz, a terrorist group with many members from Chechnya and the broader Caucasus region, but ended up joining the Syrian military instead.

Syria’s new government has repeatedly vowed to combat terrorism, committing not to allow any cross-border activities. However, as evident from the recent case in Stavropol, this not yet to case, at least when it comes to Russia.
