U.S. Considering Moving Bases Away From Gulf After Damaging Iranian Strikes

The United States is weighing whether to shift some military operations away from vulnerable Persian Gulf bases after Iranian strikes caused extensive damage to its naval base in Bahrain, the Wall Street Journal reported on June 25.

Citing satellite imagery, verified social media footage and interviews with current and former service members, the Journal said that Naval Support Activity Bahrain — home to the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet — was repeatedly targeted between late February and June.

The strikes damaged the base’s command headquarters, at least a dozen other buildings and two satellite communications terminals, according to the report.

The damage at Bahrain alone is estimated to cost roughly $400 million to rebuild, while total damage to U.S. bases across the Gulf may exceed $2 billion.

The report said that the U.S. is considering refurnishing the base in Bahrain while shrinking its military footprint in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, instead moving bases and operations westward where they would be further away from Iranian missiles and drones.

One location where some U.S. bases could end up getting relocated to is Israel, two of the officials cited in the report told the Journal.

The report suggests that Iranian missile and drone strikes have forced a broader U.S. rethink of how exposed its Gulf military network remains to future attacks.

This represents yet another major achievement for Iran, who has for long called for a U.S. military withdrawal from the Gulf.

While the U.S. is not leaving the Middle East, relocating westward will limit its military operational capabilities in the Gulf. Iran, which already has the upper hand in the region as evident by the recent war, will de facto become the dominant force there.

This relocation will likely encourage Gulf states to improve ties with the Islamic Republic, easing much of the tensions that emerged with the American-Israeli war.
