Russian specialists are enhancing the T-90M Proryv main battle tank based on feedback from troops in the special military operation zone in Ukraine and have upgraded its electronic warfare systems over the past few months, the state technology corporation Rostec announced on June 23.

“The T-90 is a well-known tank. It has become more powerful with enhanced armor and protection. This is an ongoing process. The armored vehicle continues to be improved. Our specialists are refining the hardware based on new tasks coming from the frontline. The knowledge of fighters engaged in the special military operation, who have practical experience of operating our equipment, is useful for modernizing hardware and creating new models,” Rostec Deputy CEO Nikolay Volobuyev said in a statement.

The T-90M is a heavily upgraded version of the T-90. The tank features a modernized “all welded” turret with the new advanced fire control system Kalina and the new Irbis-K gunner’s sight. The turret is also equipped with four video cameras that provide a 360° view of the environment for the commander.

The tank is armed with an upgraded 2A46M-5 125 mm smoothbore gun capable of firing laser-guided Refleks anti-tank missiles as well as a coaxial PKMT 7,62 mm machine gun and the UDP T05BV-1 remote weapon station with a Kord 12,7 mm machine gun.

It is also equipped with an upgraded AZ-185M2 autoloader which can be loaded with the larger and more effective armor-piercing rounds Svinets-1 and Svinets-2.

Over the past few months, the T-90M has received a significantly enhanced electronic warfare system, according to Rostec.

The sides and rear of the tank’s hull and turret are completely protected with Relikt third-generation  explosive reactive armor blocks.

Rostec said that the latest modifications added an extra protection to the engine-transmission compartment projection in the tank’s upper hemisphere defense.

The manufacturer, Uralvagonzavod, is continuing efforts on further developing the tank’s passive and active defense systems and improving its operational and technical characteristics, the corporation added, noting that the emphasis is placed on boosting the survivability of tanks and the safety of crews.

The T-90M has already proven its worth in the special military operation zone, outperforming the West’s best main tanks, like the American-made Arbrams, the German-made Leopard 2 and the British-made Challenger 2 which are in service with Kiev forces.

Several hundreds T-90M are believed to be currently in service with the Russian military. The number continues to grow due to steady supplies by Uralvagonzavod.
