President Donald Trump announced on June 11 that the United States will be “hitting Iran…VERY HARD TONIGHT,” going as far as hinting that American forces could also seize Kharg Island.
“At some point in the not too distant future, we will be taking Kharg Island, and other oil infrastructure points, and assume total control of their oil and gas markets, much like we have with Venezuela, which is working out brilliantly for both Venezuela and the United States of America,” Trump added on Truth Social.
Kharg Island, located in the northern Persian Gulf, serves as the export terminal for approximately 90 percent of Iran’s crude oil.
Soon after making the threat on Truth Social, Trump backed down, telling Fox News that he is not convinced that Americans are willing to pay the price of taking the strategic island.
“We are talking to them, and all, but you know, look, my preference has always been — take Kharg Island,” Trump told the “Fox and Friends” morning show.
“I don’t know that America has the stomach for it,” the president acknowledged.
Iran is “dying to make a deal” and “is being decimated,” Trump added, claiming that the Iranians are “in submission,” but “they just don’t know it yet.”
Asked if the U.S. would start attacking power plants and bridges as he has previously threatened, he replies, “Yeah, but I’d rather not do it, because once you do that, the people suffer.”
Overnight, the U.S. launched an extensive wave of strikes against Iran, mainly hitting air defenses and radar sites close to the Strait of Hormuz. This was the second such attack since the start of the week. Iran responded by attacking key American bases in Jordan, Kuwait and Bahrain with ballistic missiles and one-way attack drones.
While Trump quickly downplayed his latest threats, the U.S. military has the necessary assets in the Middle East to conduct a ground operation in Iran — whether by landing on Kharg Island or elsewhere.
Two carrier strike groups, one led by the USS Abraham Lincoln and another by the USS George H.W. Bush, are currently deployed in the Arabian Sea, along with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit. Paratroops from the elite 82nd Airborne Division are also deployed in the region.
