Russian Geran Drones Sank Ukrainian Boats With Special Forces (Video)

The Russian military on June 6 sank two Ukrainian fast assault boats off the coast of the port city of Odessa using Geran-2 drones.

The boats were reportedly carrying full-equipped special forces operators, most likely on their way to carry out an amphibious assault on the shores of the Kherson region, the Crimean Peninsula, or one of the Russian-controlled rigs in the Black Sea. They were, however, targeted right after sailing off from Odess, which indicates that Russia had prior knowledge of the plot.

Both boats went full speed and attempted to maneuver to avoid the incoming drones, but to no avail. They both got hit and sank. The fires were observed all the way from Odessa.

The Geran-2, a version of Iran’s Shahed-136, has a range of up to 2,500 kilometers and can carry a warhead weighing 30-50 kg.

Notably, the loitering munition version of the Geran-2 was used to target the boats. This version comes equipped with an artificial intelligence-aided optical targeting system with a two-way data-link, in addition to the standard jamming-resistance GLONASS-aided inertial navigation system.

Just last month, the Russian military used this version for the first time to destroy a Ukrainian drone boat off the coast of Crimea.

The latest strikes near Odessa further confirmed that the loitering munition version of the Geran-2 is fully capable of engaging naval vessels, no matter how small, fast or maneuverable they are.
