After Heated Night, Trump Says He Wants To Meet Iran’s Supreme Leader

United States President Donald Trump said during an interview with The New York Post’s “Pod Force One” podcast that Iran has agreed not to obtain nuclear weapons.

The interview was released on June 3, just hours after another clash between the U.S. and Iran, which saw the latter launching strikes against bases hosting American forces in Kuwait and Bahrain in response to an attack on a tanker that was sailing towards one of its ports.

“We can’t let them have a nuclear weapon. And they’ve already agreed they’re not gonna have a nuclear weapon,” Trump told the New York Post.

“They’ve agreed to that. They can change their mind, but that’s, that was one of the things they had to agree, they agreed to that – that was the big thing,” he added.

Trump also said he believes that Iran’s newly elected Supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, is “involved, absolutely” in talks on ending the war and that “[Iranians] have a lot of respect for him,” though he declined to comment on reports that he was severely injured during Israel’s opening strikes in the war that killed his father, the late Supreme leader Ali Khamenei, and other members of his family.

“I’d like to meet him,” Trump said, adding, “I’d love to meet everybody. I would like to meet him, and we probably will meet at some point, depending on how it all works out.”

The overnight clash was the second in under a week, and the most violent since the ceasefire between the two entered into effect more than a month ago.

Kuwait said that one person was killed and 63 others were wounded. The country’s main international airport also took severe damage, despite the ministry of defense claiming that interception of 13 ballistic missiles and 17 one-way attack drones.

Impacts were also reported in Bahrain, mainly in the headquarters of the U.S. Navy Fifth Fleet based in the capital, Manama. A container ship anchored nearby also came under attack. The country said that three missiles and a number of drones were intercepted.

Ahead of the clash, Iranian media reported that the Islamic Republic halted the exchange of messages with Washington in protest to repeated violations of the ceasefire.

A report published by the semi-official Tasnim News Agency after the clash affirmed that despite Trump’s recent claims, Iran has not responded to the U.S. in recent days.

Mohsen Rezaee, an Iranian politician and senior military officer in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, even warned the U.S. against any further escalation.

“Neither in negotiations nor in the ceasefire process will we allow America to overreach. The response to every shot and aggression will be a barrage of missiles and drones. History will not turn back, and the aggressor will be swiftly punished,” he wrote on X.

All in all, major differences between the U.S. and Iran remain in place, and the optimistic image Trump is presenting is clearly an exaggeration.

The latest deadly clash shows that the ceasefire is slowly collapsing. War could resume soon without a serious breakthrough in efforts to reach a memorandum of understanding. Even then, a meeting between Trump and Khamenei remains highly-unlikely.
