Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed late on June 1 that its naval forces targeted the container ship MSC Sariska V with a cruise missile in what it described as a “retaliatory operation” following an alleged attack by the United States on an Iranian ship in the Sea of Oman.
The attack on the MSC Sariska V in Iraqi port of Umm Qasr was first reported by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), which said in an advisory notice at the time that the ship was hit on its starboard side by an “unknown projectile,” triggering a “large explosion.” No injuries were reported.
In a statement shared by Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB, the IRGC said that the attack came after an “aggressive attack” by the U.S. military on the Iranian vessel Lian Star in the Sea of Oman. The guards claimed that the MSC Sariska V was owned by what it described as the “U.S.-Zionist enemy.”
Lian Star was hit just two three earlier, with the U.S. Central Command claimed at the time that the cargo ship was sailing toward an Iranian port in violation of its blockade.
The MSC Sariska V was targeted as part of a “retaliatory operation,” according to the IRGC, which warned that any further actions by the U.S. in the region would be met with a “decisive response.”
“Any act of aggression by the US military in this region will face a firm response,” the statement said.
Video footage shared by the IRGC later showed the launch of what appears to be an Iranian-made Noor anti-ship cruise missile, which is a reverse engineered Chinese C-802.
The Islamic Republic produces several versions of the Noor, with an average range of 120 kilometers, or around 125 nautical miles. The missile is equipped with an Inertial navigation system, and utilizes an active radar housing seeker in its terminal phase.
It’s worth noting that the attack on the MSC Sariska V came following another clash between Iran and the U.S. in the Persian Gulf, with later reports suggesting that the Islamic Republic halted the exchange of messages with Washington through mediators in response to ceasefire violations, including an escalation by Israel against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
