Hezbollah Drone Kills Israeli Anti-Drone System (Video)

Hezbollah on May 27 released video footage documenting a drone strike against an anti-drone system of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).

The system, deployed an IDF site atop of al-Jardah along the Blue Line — a separation line set by the United Nations following the Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon in 2000 —, was targeted with a fiber optic-guided first person view (FPV) suicide quadcopter.

The attack took place on May 23. At the time, Hezbollah identified the system in a statement as the Drone Dome, developed by Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems.

The Drone dome is made up of different sensors, including radars, electro-optical trackers, and jammers. The system costs a little over $3,2 million.

Although this is the first time Hezbollah has released video footage confirming the destruction of a Drone Dome system since fighting resumed in Lebanon in March, the group had previously announced separate strikes against five such systems, even after the ceasefire imposed by the United States in April.

It is of course clear that the multi-million system is completely useless in the face of fiber optic-guided FPV suicide quadcopters, which are immune to jamming.

The drone strike that destroyed the Drone Dome system was of dozens that targeted the IDF in southern Lebanon and northern Israel in the last few days.

Fiber optic-guided FPV suicide quadcopters, which are cheap and easy to produce, have been a gamechanger for Hezbollah.

The IDF is said to be working on a solution to the threat posed by these drones in cooperation with the Israeli military-industrial complex, but defense officials have cautioned that a system to counter such drones will not come soon, and will not provide complete protection.

For the time being, Israeli troops are using simple counter measures like mesh nets, and they are clearly not working out well.
