United States bases and equipment in the Middle East took “extensive” damage as a result of Iranian retaliatory strikes after the start of the American-Israeli war on the Islamic Republic, NBC News reported on April 24.
The report cited three U.S. officials, two congressional aides, another person familiar with the damage, in addition to an assessment by the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank in Washington.
NBC News said that the damages from Iranian retaliatory strikes against U.S. military bases in seven Middle Eastern countries were “far worse than publicly acknowledged and is expected to cost billions of dollars to repair”.
Iran hit dozens of targets, including warehouses, command headquarters, aircraft hangars, satellite communications infrastructure, runways, high-end radar systems and dozens of aircraft, according to the report.
It added that Iran used missiles, drones and even fighter jets to target U.S. bases in the region, despite previous claims by the U.S. military that the Iranian air force had failed to use fighter jets against American targets.
An outdated F-5 fighter jet from the Iranian air force managed to slip past all air defenses and strike a U.S. military base in Kuwait.
The base was identified as Camp Buehring, a huge staging post in northwestern Kuwait that serves as the primary location for the U.S. Army’s Middle Eastern Theater Reserve. It provides critical live-fire ranges in the wider Udairi Range Complex area, in addition to desert-familiarization training meant to prepare tens of thousands of troops for combat operations in the region.
The post is capable of hosting dozens of helicopters, and has an airstrip especially for military cargo aircraft and combat drones.
The Iranian air force received more than 300 F-5 from the U.S. starting in the 1960s and all the way through the 1970s. Less then 40 are reported to be still in service, and beside being completely outdated, they are in a poor operational condition.
The attack on Camp Buehring was, according to NBC News, the first successful strike by a foreign fighter jet on U.S. forces in decades.
NBC News’ report was not surprising as satellite images and photos leaked online have already revealed billions worth of U.S. military losses. These losses were not just damaging in the financial sense, but even on the operational level. The Iranian air force strike on Camp Buehring is one example of how U.S. military capabilities were degraded as a result of Iranian retaliatory strikes.
